Ladies Choice
PART 7
Bess gasped. “WOW!”
It was Saturday evening and
Nan was in Mrs. Jo’s room getting ready for the dance. Bess had just walked in to get her aunt’s
opinion on how she looked but was surprised at what she saw.
“Nan, you look beautiful,”
Bess complimented sincerely.
“She does, doesn’t she?” Jo
agreed with her niece. Bess just
nodded.
Nan was wearing a beautiful,
brand new, dark green dress with small white flowers printed on it. The bodice modestly showed off Nan’s womanly
figure that she would normally keep hidden, and the skirt went down to just
below her ankles. Nan’s strawberry
blond hair had been put up in a small bun on top; one of Jo’s hairpieces kept
it in place. She had a little bit of
hair hanging down from each side of her face that had not been placed into the
bun, and each side had been curled. She
turned toward Bess and smiled.
“You like it then?” she
asked her friend.
“I love it. You actually look…like a girl.”
“I’ll take that as a
complement,” Nan giggled.
“JO, BESS, NAN!!! Hurry up.
We’ll be late if you don’t get down here.” The three heard Nick yell
from downstairs.
“I’ll go downstairs and let
them know you’ll be down in a minute,” Jo told them and left the room.
Jo descended the
stairs. As Nick looked up at her in her
dark blue dress, all he could say was, “Wow.”
The boys snickered behind him.
“Nick.” She looked at all of the nicely dressed
boys. They were all wearing freshly
pressed suits. “Don’t you all look
nice.”
“Where are the girls?” Nick
asked.
“They’ll
be down soon,” she winked at Nick. Her
way of telling him that the boys were in for a surprise. “Dan, Nat, your dates look absolutely
gorgeous.”
The
boys smiled nervously awaiting their arrival.
“Here, don’t forget this,”
Bess picked up a fancy hat that matched Nan’s dress. She gently placed it on top of Nan’s head so as not to mess up
the beautiful hairstyle.
“Gorgeous. You look like you’re
from Boston.”
“Is that good?”
“Of course it is. Nat’s going to drop dead when he sees you. Come to think of it; all of the boys might.”
“I hate to do that,” Nan
laughed.
“Ready to go?”
“Give me one more minute,
Bess.”
“Ok,” she said as she headed
out the room.
Bess was the next one to
descend the stairway. She was wearing a
breathtaking maroon dress. She looked
20 not 16. Dan walked toward the stairs
as she got to the bottom.
He took her hands. “You look great.”
“Thank you,” she
curtsied. “Nan will be down in a
minute. I think she wanted to take one
last look in the mirror.”
“Since when does Nan look in
a mirror?” Emil commented.
Just then they saw Nan at
the top of the stairs. Jo had begun teaching her how to dress and act like a
lady, and one of the first things was to not run down the stairs. Nan took one step at a time heading down
toward the bottom. All of the men
stared at her with their mouth hung open.
“Nan? Is that you?” Nick looked at the girl that
had just come down the stairs.
“What have you done with our
Nan?” Tommy complained.
Nan giggled, “I’m right here
Tommy.”
“Wow,” Emil said. “You’re a girl.”
“I know that,” she
smiled. She was having a great time
seeing the looks on everyone face. She
turned toward her date.
“Nat.”
“Nan,” he said
breathlessly. “You look beautiful.”
“Thank you,” she said
quietly.
Nat regained his
composure. “May I?” he held out his arm
for her to take.
“You may,” she took his arm
and they and the others headed out the door toward and evening of fun and
excitement.
