My Art....my diary
by Raqs Santos-Garcia

My art is my diary. And when I paint, I prefer being alone to avoid any distraction.  Each piece that stems from my imagination expresses a day of happiness, anger or pain.  Through my painting, you have a glimpse at a portion of my life...a day I choose to spend, by creating memorabilia for people who appreciate  & understand me.

My urge to paint comes from within.  I just paint when I like to paint and only paint what I feel like painting.  And whenever I do, I allow my hand to work with my heart.  I truly believe that a painting should be a manifestation of the artist’s soul, and that a painter should only use his canvas as a means of translating his thoughts and emotions into strokes and colors.  This makes me remember: A professor once taught me how to paint blind.  Being blindfolded, I worked in a very fast manner (without checking the colors I picked-up) and was “not careful” of the strokes I made.  It was through this experience that I learned to produce pieces of true personal art.

There are moments when I just smudge and doodle on paper ‘till an image becomes visible.  There are times when an image just pops up in me, coming from a dream or sometimes, from nowhere.  Nevertheless,   Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh and Henri Matisse have always been of great influence in my choice of subject and color. I love to paint flowers and country settings, mostly dealing with interior scenes. Blues, yellows and greens are favorites.

I love sharing my art with people who respect my ideas, value my works and recognize my presence...now that I am still around.  And it is through this that I’m grateful to those who admire my paintings; especially those buyers who don’t even mind spending just to own a part of me.
