SYNOPSIS: WHAT IS HALLOWEEN?
Halloween started over 2000 years ago when mysterious people called the Celts and Druids who lived in the British Isles of Scotland, England, Wales, and Ireland. To them October 31st was like New Year's eve and was a night of terror called "Samhain." They also believed that the spirits of those that had died came back for a visit, and so many of them lit bonfires to keep the friendly ones warm and keep the scary ones away. Eventually, this evolved to the point where people dressed like those of the dead. "Trick or Treat" from door to door meant that if they did not recieve a treat, they would pull a prank and/or cause mischief to their house. Many regard "Mischief Night" as the night before Halloween where they go to a person's house an litter it with eggs, and toilet paper strewn amongst the trees. Today, it is generally regarded as a children's holiday, dressing in costumes of their most popular heros, cartoon characters and such. Adults too get to join in the fun, many cities have parades where they dress up and march, its open to the public and almost anything goes. Two of the most popular "bi-coastal" events are the Greenwich Village Halloween Parade in Manhattan, New York City and West Hollywood, CA's Halloween Carnival, though the holiday has commercially exploded across North and parts of Latin America, proving "escapist masquerades" are healthy, ageless fun.
