E-mail #14 to the GROUP (17 December 2005)
I have decided that I will hold class this Wednesday 21 December 2005.... Thomasville Road Baptist Church 11am - 1pm
I have TWO students who have paid for materials, and I need TWO more for a total of FOUR as a minimum order for GLEIM to take advantage of the GREAT deal that the publisher has offered us.
I have recieved a few e-mails from folks asking me to STOP sending so many e-mails... I am trying to figure out the right balance...
YOUR NEXT ASSIGNMENT is to tell me how much time per/day..& .per/wk that you plan to devote to flight school study... this will really help me get an idea about who is serious and who is not.... I encourage ANYONE to participate as often as you like...By next wednesday I plan on assigning ROSTER numbers to each student.. and I will refer to you PUBLICLY by your roster number so that you can maintain anonymity on the PUBLIC boards if you wish.. I will notify you individually of your roster number...
FLYING IS FUN.. and LEARNING TO FLY is JUST AS FUN !

I originally put out that I would hold CLASSROOM SESSIONS every Wednesday 11-1 at Thomasville Road Baptist Church.. Since I only had ONE student show up..I am re-evaluating the "demand" for CLASSROOM training.. I still have the classroom reserved indefinately on WEDNESDAYS from 11-1.. Please follow the e-mails AND THE WEBSITE for DAILY UPDATES on the class status..

E-mail #12 to the GROUP (10 December 2005) Greetings..
This is turning out to be an exciting adventure for me, I hope you are enjoying this ONLINE FLIGHT SCHOOL.. If you have any QUESTIONS please remember to put the word QUESTION in the subject line.. and only ONE QUESTION per e-mail.. however you may submit as many questions as you wish... ---------- Next assignment.... Start to study the PHONETIC alphabet and practice it
http://www.grc.nasa.gov/WWW/MAEL/ag/phonetic.htm
Let me know when you have it memorized !! Tell me what the difference is between: Density Altitude and Pressure Altitude For my beginners don't feel overwhelmed at the informaiton I am asking for... this is an OPEN book or should I say OPEN INTERNET class.... I want you to use your resources to answer the qusetions and start to get an idea about what flying is all about... I am looking forward to seeing YOU ALL next Wednesday 11:00AM to 1:00PM at TRBC.. we will be meeing UPSTAIRS in Room F of the new building behind the MAIN CHURCH BUILDING (ABOVE) the Administrative Offices.. Also known as the "LOFT"... Please call me if you have any questions (850) 933-8511

E-mail #11 to the GROUP (07 December 2005) MISSING INSTRUMENT QUESTION....
many of you had made great effort on this one......
The CRITICAL missing instrument from the panel , at least I don"t see it...is the COMPASS... the compass is independent of all instruments/systems .....
TELL ME WHY?
The flight instrument on the panel is a DIRECTIONAL GYRO.. it ONLY tells your ACTUAL direction when set to match the COMPASS.. Which you must CONSTANTLY check/re-check/adjust in flight.....
NOTICE THE ADJUSTMENT KNOB to the lower left of the instrument..
......WHY?
BONUS QUESTIONS.....
Many of you identified correctly the TRANSPONDER.. but no one told me why it was set at 1200... tell me what that number means...
also tell me what other TRANSPONDER CODES the pilot might set AUTOMATICLY without direction from AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL..

E-mail #10 to the GROUP (06 December 2005) The CLASS is really growing.. Many of you have sent in some great "GUESSES" on the panel test.. and some of you have sent me MORE verbose answers than necessary... I only got ONE CORRECT answer on the PITOT question which is okay... I still have only recieved replies from less than HALF of the registered students.. It is very important that you try to spend at least 15mins a day on this class.. you will find out very quickly if this is really something you want to do.... Feel free to RESEARCH your answers in books or on the internet.. flying is always an OPEN BOOK exam !.. In the real world if you have a question and you have time, use ANY and ALL resources to get the BEST answer! Sometimes in flying you DON'T have time to research the answer.. For Example if you are 100 FEET above the ground, and your airspeed is TOO SLOW..and the aircraft starts to decend rapidly (STALL) we call this TOO LOW and TOO SLOW.. you Don't have time to research the solution to this problem... you better LOWER the NOSE (to pick up airspeed), and INCREASE POWER to gain ALTITUDE (or at lease stop the rapid descent) Other than that if you have time to answer a question.. do your best research and answer the question the best that you can.. I will use the panel photo for MANY of the assignments so if you can print it out that would be helpful !
ASSIGNMENT #4
Tell me what you know about the controls.. What happens when you turn the wheel to the left/right.. What happens when you pull in towards you or push it away from you....
Look forward to hearing back from you ALL !!
There is NO time limit for ANY of the assignments.. it is BEST to answer them as best as you can, the same day you get the assignment.. It will make the classroom time MUCH BETTER !!
If you plan to purchase a Gleim Private Pilot Kit please e-mail me ASAP put the word GLEIM ORDER in the subject line PLEASE ..

E-mail #9 to the GROUP (06 December 2005)
Ok... I will probably place the order around the FIRST of JANUARY to give everyone a chance to get the money to me.. ORDER must be prepaid so you will be counted in as soon as I get the money...I will pay for shipping,, but I always accept donations, which I will pass on to the church for use of the classroom... I want this to be a VOLUNTEER PROJECT...

E-mail #8 to the GROUP (06 December 2005)
GREAT NEWS !
I have established an account with Gleim Publications, and I am willing to purchase Private Pilot Kits in BULK for this class and pass the discount I recieve on to YOU the STUDENT.
I did not start this project to make money and that is why I am passing my discount on to Ya'all.
Based on the discount I am recieving from GLEIM I can offer you the PRIVATE PILOT KIT for only $99.00 !!(INCLUDES TAX,SHIPPING and HANDLING) (RETAIL COST is $129.95 PLUS tax shipping and handling) If you are intersted in OTHER GLEIM products and want me to add it to the CLASS ORDER please e-mail or call me ASAP I can get ANYTHING they sell at a discount that I will pass directly on to YOU.
Click on the KIT ICON on the class website to see what you get in the kit ! Thank YOU Gleim Publications for your generous contribution to this class !!!
I would prefer to give the kits to you in PERSON so I don't have to pay for SHIPPING from me to you. If you are an "ONLINE ONLY" student and are not able to come to Tallahassee to pick up your materials I will ship it to you at my expense, please DO NOT abuse this.
Due to the fact that I must pay for the materials UP FRONT, I can only accept payment by MONEY ORDER or CAHSIERS CHECK. I have also set up a "donate" button via PayPal on the class website which is the preffered method of payment (PAID to DCO Enterprises). Again I am NOT trying to make money on this class.
Still waiting to hear from TRBC on the classroom approval ! How are you doing on the FIRST THREE ASSIGNMENTS !!

Greetings !
I am getting back a few replies to Assignment #1 and #2 - I really need this back ASAP..
CLARIFICATION for Assignment #2 ..
Based on the responses I have recieved it is obvious that a few of you have some experience...
The purposed of the Panel Assignment is for me to get an idea about where you are in the training.. please ONLY e-mail with information about the items you UNSURE of for example the "sqaure knob to the left of the throttle.. etc"
If this is ALL new to you. I want you to take a guess on some of them so I can see how your logical reasoning..for example.. (the Alititude thing tells me how high above the ground I am) <-- WHICH IS INCORRECT BY THE WAY, but at least it lets me know you are thinking..
NOW for ASSIGNMENT #3
What CRITICAL instrument is MISSING from the PANEL PHOTO .. If you don't know it's okay.. Just send me an e-mail that you don't know... This question is geared towards some of the folks with a little experience..
I look forward to hearing back from you !!

E-mail #5 to the GROUP (04 December 2005) Greetings !!
Wow I am very excited about how fast this class in growing ! Many of you have requested to participate in the class ONLINE rather than in person and that is GREAT !! However, classroom participation is STRONGLY encouraged!
I have started a FreeRepublic thread for those who want to share thoughts and questions publicly.
The URL for that thread is: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-bloggers/1533534/posts
A link is also provided at the TOP of the class website.
I have only recieved a couple of e-mails for the 1st class ASSIGNMENT (tell me why you want to take this class, and include ANY previous flight training.
To those who have responded THANKS ! This information will be very helpful to me.
ALSO if you want to submit a question please do so ONE e-mail per question and put the word QUESTION in the subject line. This will help me to respond to everyone at one time with the ANSWER to keep from having to repeat the answer.
Again, I am looking forward to getting this class "OFF THE GROUND" !!

PLEASE send me a short e-mail telling me about WHY you want to take this class, and include any previous flight training/experience.
Look forward to hearing from you, and as always I will post this e-mail and future e-mails to the website http://www.fly.davidosborne.net
Also, I posted a link to GLEIM publications on the top of the website, I am working the publisher on getting a discount on the package if you want to wait to see how it pans out before ordering anything.

I spoke with the classroom coordinator at Thomasville Road Baptist Church today. My request for a classroom will be presented to the board next week. I will report back to ya'all on their answer.
In the meantime I would like a e-mail from EACH student (Separate e-mail if possible, feel free to set a free e-mail account on hotmail or yahoo just for this class if you want to keep this pilot stuff separate)
I would like to know why you are interested in this class and any flight training experience you have. This will help me understand where ya'all stand in your flight training.
I have also set up a website JUST for this class.. it is
http://www.fly.davidosborne.net
I will post these e-mail on this website, and expand the site capabilites as week make progess.

E-mail #1 to the GROUP (01 December 2005) This is the FIRST e-mail I am sending out to the GROUP that has repled to this e-mail address.
If you know of anyone else that is intersted in being on this E-mail list please ask them to send a e-mail to this address.
I am still working out the details for the class, and I will post any information in the nest e-mail.
I will also try to answer any questions that folks have posted in a single e-mail to everone because someone else might have the same question but is affraid to ask it..
Each E-mail I send out will include all of the PREVIOUS e-mails listed chronologically (with the most recent information on top)
QUESTION #1: Have you thought about asking one (or more) of the teens in the group to babysit younger siblings during the class? That might make it easier for more parents to participate. ;-)
ANSWER #1: I will not make any childcare arrangements but if any of Ya'all want to work something out between yourselves that would be great.
QUESTION #2: BTW, are you familiar with the Big Bend Flying Club, hosted by Marc Dupuis on the first Wednesday of each month? He always tries to have an informative video or speaker or other good presentation at the meetings.
ANSWER #2: No, I am not familiar with this group, but I am passing it on to the group for anyone who might be interested in participating.
QUESTION #3: Can you please tell me how many classes there will be and where you will meet and when you are planning to start. What is the makeup of the class so far? Do you have several middle school students? Do I need to stay with him or can I leave him?
ANSWER #3: I hope to continue the classes on a ONCE-A-WEEK basis, indefinately, as long as there is an interest, and I am physically able to do it. I can't give an honest makeup of the class just yet. I expect I will have students of ALL AGES, and ALL are welcome to stay, as long the class in not disrupted (ie. small kids who are disruptive will be excused from the class)
IMPORTANT.... YOUR E-mail address will NOT be displayed (BCC'd) unless you specifically ask me to share your E-maill address with OTHER students, in which case I will place your E-mail address in the CC line.
If you have any questions please e-mail or call me (933-8511)
