Longtime fans of XTC will be delighted by Andy Partridge and
Colin Moulding's return to the rockier roots of early '80s
touchstones "Black Sea" and "English Settlement." After
sitting on their hands for most of the '90s, Partridge and
Moulding are suddenly as prolific and inspired as ever,
having released three new titles in the past 15 months. In
contrast to the ornate "Apple Venus Volume One" and
"Homespun," its "lost years" demo companion, "Wasp Star" has
the feel of a recording by a couple of guys who are ready to
mix it up with the real world. Plugged in and feeling
frisky, XTC lay it on the line with the hooky likes of the
baldly giddy "Stupidly Happy" and the potent first single,
"I'm the Man Who Murdered Love."

For "Farmhouse," Vermont's favorite jam-rockers retreated to
Trey Anastasio's 150-year-old barn and reined in their
experimental tendencies for a sharply focused song
collection. With singer and guitarist Anastasio calling the
shots, they emerge with a finely honed gathering of tunes
that may finally get the experimental rockers on the radio.

The much-anticipated 13-song set marks the return of the
former Eagle frontman, who sets off on tour in June. With
his three prior solo outings, Henley adeptly maintained a
connection with the music of his storied former band while
forging ahead in establishing his identity as an individual.
He does so again with "Inside Job," a self-described "diary
of the last 11 years," in which the singer-songwriter
unblushingly exposes his tender and prickly sides. "Inside
Job," indeed. Coproduced by Stan Lynch (longtime drummer
with Tom Petty's Heartbreakers), and featuring such guests
as Stevie Wonder, Randy Newman, and fellow Texan Jimmie
Vaughan, "Inside Job" puts one of the most successful
rockers of the last three decades back in the spotlight.

The Jayhawks laid the groundwork for the '90s y'alternative
movement a decade and a half ago when they first emerged
from Minneapolis with a series of recordings that updated
'70s rock of the Gram Parsons ilk with a post-punk
sensibility. "Smile," the Jayhawks' first album in three
years, finds Gary Louris and company continuing to broaden
their palette to encompass '70s-style psychedelic rock.
They've brought aboard producer Bob Ezrin of Pink Floyd,
Alice Cooper, and Lou Reed fame, and he helps the quintet
deliver a set that's more extravagant than one might expect
from these alt-country trailblazers. Old fans needn't fear,
however--the Jayhawks maintain ties to the sound that made
them indie heroes of the '80s and '90s.
