The Origonal Robin Hood

Robin Hood myths are known to date back as early as the 1300's, one of the oldest and most popular being 'the Geste of Robyn Hode'. Further more, Robin Hood was said to have been born poor, instead of from noble parentage.
He did not steal from the rich and give to the poor. Nor did he necessarily steal from the rich alone. It's said that he would indeed keep a hide-out in the woods; however, he was not attended to by Merry Men. Instead, if he kept any company at all, it was fellow bandits. He would steal from whom ever came by, rich or poor, and keep the spoils for himself. Instead, he would often rob and beat, if not kill his victim after taking them for all their posessions.

As mentioned, Robin Hood was not often with company in the origonal tales. Most associate him with his friends Little John, Will Scarlet, and the Merry Men. If he was accompanied at all, he certainly did not keep company with Merry Men, much less a kindly old Friar. There was also no Maid Marian for him to romance in the origonal stories. If there were women with Robin Hood in his early adventures, they were definetly not 'ladies' but harlets. It is rumoured that Robin Hood may have even been a bit of a lecher.
Most of the sources of the changes to the Robin Hood myths can be outlined as so.
