Alex went into the closet and got something to wear and then headed into bathroom. Nick made himself comfortable on the bed and flipped on the TV, “What are you doing today?”
Alex stuck her head out of the bathroom, “I’m going to go see what Colby’s problem is and then run some errands.”
“Can I go with you?”
“I don’t care.” She yelled over the sound of the water. She took a quick shower and got dressed. She was attempting to put some make-up on when she heard her name. She opened the door to see Nick sprawled across the bed and looking intently at the TV screen.
Alex looked at the TV at a pretty young blonde reporter, “Alex Paine, starting pitcher for the University of Florida, has not confirmed her possession for next year. Paine has been rumored to be engaged and may not return to the team. Coach Aldrich has not made any final statements only that he has not talked to Paine officially yet. Paine is most likely to be the first female offered a contract for the pros, if she pursues her career.”
Nick looked over to Alex, “What are you going to do?”
“I don’t know. I have a lot to do, and a lot to think about.”
“When do you have to make it final?”
“Tomorrow.” She said walking out.
Nick followed her downstairs, “Are you leaving?”
“Yeah, I’m going to go see what Colby’s problem is.” She grabbed a bottle of water out of the refrigerator and then noticed the paper that was on the table. The Sports section was on top and Alex saw her name. She looked up at Nick, “Did you read it?”
“Yeah.”
“What did it say?”
“It just talked about your chances, how people wanted to recruit you, records you’ve broke.”
“What do you think I should do?” Alex asked looking down at the paper
“You’re good at what you do, they say you can make pros if you want to.”
“What if I don’t want to?”
“Then don’t do it.” Alex nodded and turned to go, “Do you want me to go with you? I mean I understand if you need to think.”
“I don’t care.”
Nick touched her arm, “Do you want me to go?”
“Yes.”
“Okay, let me go get my shoes.”
Alex went and got into the Explorer and waited for Nick. In a few minutes he came back out and they headed over to Colby’s to see what was wrong. Alex was making her way thru the many cars and vans, “What in the world is going on?”
“I don’t know.” Nick said looking around, “Oh, I think I’ve found the problem.”
“What?” Nick pointed towards Colby’s apartment. He was outside surrounded by a bunch of reporters. Alex parked and got out, "I’ll be right back.” She walked towards the crowd and listened to what they were asking, they were asking about her. Colby was trying to answer their questions and looked almost relieved when he saw Alex. As soon as the reporter’s saw her they swarmed towards her like a herd of cattle asking a million questions all at once. Alex pulled her sunglasses off and put her hands up, “Please, one at a time.”
A blond lady stepped up and shoved a mic in her face, “Sandy Gent, with the Tampa Chronicle, Ms. Paine, is it true by getting married you are loosing your chances to get into the pros and letting your career slip away?”
