Part 15

******************1 month later**********************

It was spring, the sun was out and everything was coming alive with the promise of summer. For Alex it was the last stretch of high school and she knew that she was really going to miss it, but for now, it was spring and that meant one thing, baseball.

She ran down the hall to the posting bored and scanned it for the team posting. She found it and ran her finger down the list until she came across her name. Her heart skipped a beat as she read the line

Alex Paine -----------------Starting pitcher

"Yes!" She almost yelped. She looked around, the hall was emptying and only a few people looked her way.

"I'm surprised you had to look Alex, you know you've always been my best pitcher." Alex turned to find Coach Adams looking at her from were he was leaning against the doorframe.

Alex grinned at him, she had played for him ever since little league, and he was basically part of the family. He had been the one to talk her parents into playing with the guys.

"You still got your speed?"

"I dunno, but we can sure find out. Practice same place?"

"Yes and," he looked at his watch, "you better run because you're gonna be late."

Alex looked at her watch, "Oh yeah!"

"TELL THE GUYS TO WARM UP!" Coach yelled after her

**************************

Nick sat in his truck and waited, he had come into town to surprise Alex. She had told him that her car was in the shop, so being the sweet boyfriend he was he had decided to pick her up. He watched and saw her come running out the front door of the school. He watched her dart around several people and clear a railing. "Wow, that girl can run." He told his empty truck. He wondered were she was going, and then got an idea. He picked up his cell phone and called her house

"Hello?"

"Hello Mrs. Paine, this is Nick."

"Well, hello Nick, Alex is at practice this afternoon, but she should be back in an hour and a half."

"Practice?"

"Yes, didn't she tell you? Alex is the starting pitcher for the baseball team."

"Baseball? You mean softball?"

"No, baseball. She's been playing since she was little. She's even been offered several scholarships. She's actually very good."

Nick sat their and stared at really nothing running the words over in his head, Alex was a pitcher for the school baseball team, she's had scholarships offered. Mrs. Paine snapped him back to reality by saying,

"She has a game Saturday if you’d like to come. It's at Hunter Park, it's right by the school."

"Okay, I'll be there. Do me a favor and don't tell Alex, I want to see her in action."

"Okay Nick."

"Thanks."

"You're welcome."

"Bye."

"Good bye Nick."

Nick sat there for a minute before heading back to Brian's house. He thought he would call her later and see if she wanted to do something. He still didn’t know what to think out Alex, playing baseball, and the fact that she didn't bother to mention that she might be going to college on a scholarship.

***************************

Alex ran around the corner and dropped her bag at the dugout. About 20 guys were standing around, some were stretching, but most were gabbing. "Guys! Warm up!" Alex yelled walking onto the field. Most of them looked at her, gave a head up acknowledging her, and started to run laps.

Chad was started to run when someone stopped him, it was the new kid Jake, he was a junior and had a big ego. "Who's the chic trying to boss around?"

Chad looked at him for a minute, "That's the starting pitcher who can shove a ball down your throat at over a hundred miles."

"You're joking right?"

"Nahh. Now warm up!"

Coach had walked on the scene and witnessed what happened between Chad and Jake, he smiled, "We'll just have to show Jake what Alex can do.

After the had warmed up Coach yelled for passions, "Weaver! You're up for bat!"

Jake looked up at the coach before grabbing a bat and walking up to home plate. He looked at the mound and gave a little smile at Alex. She watched him and rolled her eyes. Colby Jacobs knelt down in his catchers stance and grinned, "You better watch it buddy." He gave Alex the sign for a fast ball. She grinned at him and nodded. She wound up and sent the ball flying into the catcher's mitt before Jake could even blink. He stood there like an idiot until he realized what had just happened.

Coach looked down at the speed gun 101, She hasn't lost it, he thought. He smiled and yelled "Strike 1!"

"WHAT!?" Jake yelled

**********************************

Alex walked in her room and fell across her bed. She was tired and sweaty and just wanted to sleep.

**

She woke up to the sound of her phone ringing, "Hello?"

"Hey, guess whose in town?"

Alex smiled, knowing it was Nick and guessed, "Leonardo Dicaprio?"

"HEY!"

Alex laughed, "Oh yeah that cute blond guy from the Backstreet Boys?"

"The one and the same."

"What are you doing here?"

"I missed my favorite girlfriend."

"Oh? You're favorite? Does that mean you have more than one?"

"Well, you know us famous guys, a girl in every country."

Alex laughed, "Well, I only go for the one-chic type."

"Then I have a lot of phone calls to make. How's everything going?"

"Good, schools starting to wind down, and I've started to get serious about choosing a college."

"Ahh..sounds fun."

"How are things with you?"

"Just getting ready for the European tour."

"Oh, is that coming up?"

"Yep, June."

"How long are you going to be gone?"

"Around 2 to 3 months."

"That long?!? You're gonna miss the whole summer."

"Well, yeah, but I was thinking.."

"Ahh, I thought I smelled something burning."

"Funny. Anyway, I was thinking, maybe after you have a little of the summer to yourself, you could meet us and finish the summer in Europe. You said you wanted to go to Europe after you graduated."

"I don't know. I don't think my parents would go for it, but it sounds wonderful. I'll ask and see what happens."

"So, can I come pick you up or not?"

"Yeah, no one ever said you couldn't."

"Okay, see you in a sec."

"Bye."
