ABSTRACT: Describes the Seikatsu-no Hakkenkai, a Morita-based mental health
organization in Japan. The organization's mandate is to set up self-help groups
to provide mutual support and promote group learning and mental health. The
groups encourage members to accept the reality of feelings and to set out daily
goals that they wish to accomplish during the following month. Members benefit
from involvement in group learning and shared activities by learning new ways of
coping with anxious situations and participating in life more productively and
constructively. ((c) 1999 APA/PsycINFO, all rights reserved)

ABSTRACT: Questions whether Morita therapy, a Japanese form of psychotherapy
devised by S. Morita (1928 [1984]), is based on Western medicine. The methods of
Morita therapy are compared with those methods of Western forms of treatment,
such as S. W. Mitchell's (1977, 1984) rest therapy and O. Binswanger's (1896)
geregelte Lebensfuhrung (regulated living), that Morita studied and used. The
Western forms of treatment strove for a goal on the physical level. In contrast,
Morita's aim was to cut the vicious circle of psychic interaction within the
neurotic patient. Morita therapy is not based on Western medicine; rather, its
development was stimulated by Western forms of treatment. Morita therapy
reflects a possible influence from Morita's interest in Buddhism, especially in
Zen. ((c) 1999 APA/PsycINFO, all rights reserved)

ABSTRACT: Morita therapy provides a direct and practical means to counsel
victims of sexual assault and their families. Case examples illustrate how the
Moritist principles of acceptance of emotions, constructive action, and clarity
of purpose are relevant to victims' needs. These principles help guide the rape
victim to cope with the psychological impact of the assault and to live beyond
the victimization. ((c) 1999 APA/PsycINFO, all rights reserved)

related to Morita therapy. Morita therapy is designed for clients suffering from
anxiety-related problems and unproductive mood-governed lifestyles. An overview
is presented of anecdotal reports and descriptive case studies, descriptive and
qualitative methods for process analysis, follow-up outcome surveys, time series
methods, and projective methods. Methodological and instrumentation issues are
addressed. A self and anxiety questionnaire is appended. ((c) 1999 APA/PsycINFO,

ABSTRACT: Describes the effectiveness of Morita therapy (S. Morita, 1974) in the
treatment of shinkeishitsu-sho (nervosity). Three categories of nervosity are
presented: ordinary, paroxysmal neurosis, and obsessive neurosis. Symptoms of
each category and the influence of psychic interaction are discussed. Morita
therapy in residential treatment involves bedrest, light work, hard work, and
actual life training. Patients undergo occupational therapy and receive
persuasive psychotherapy, through which they learn to accept their symptoms as
normal. Ss are not allowed to talk about their symptoms, but must accept the
more effective thinking and attitudes outlined by the doctor. ((c) 1999

ABSTRACT: Presents 4 principles of Morita therapy that can be integrated with
existing Western treatments for social avoidance and be useful in restructuring
avoidant clients' conceptualizations of their style of relating to the
environment. These principles are (1) recognition of the bilateral nature of
social anxiety and shyness, (2) acceptance of emotion, (3) recognition of
attentional fixation, and (4) constructive action-taking. The reframing and
refocusing activities that are central to the Moritist approach to social
avoidance can allow avoidant Ss to move beyond habitual patterns and make
constructive changes. ((c) 1999 APA/PsycINFO, all rights reserved)

ABSTRACT: Discusses nervous and anxious clients' tendencies to be rigid and
dogmatic in thinking and defensively self-preoccupied in action and experience.
These dogmatically self-contained clients get caught in a vicious cycle of
excessive self-focusing, aggravation of the symptoms, and unproductive action.
Morita intervention aims at reducing clients' dogmatic self-containment and
consequent neurotic preoccupations by cognitive-behavioral means and by
appealing to the clients' constructive desires. Clients' attention gets
refocused from their subjective discomfort and symptom manipulation to the
objective environment and constructive action. ((c) 1999 APA/PsycINFO, all

ABSTRACT: Describes the application of Morita therapy (MT) as a treatment for
anxious and nervous clients in shyness counseling. Shy clients in MT are
encouraged to recognize the self-actualizing meaning of social anxiety instead
of regarding it as abnormal and becoming preoccupied with attempts to control
anxiety symptoms. They are challenged to reevaluate their maladaptive cognitive
processing of shyness and their unproductive behavioral passivity. The didactic,
confrontational, and supportive messages used in MT-based counseling are
presented. Cross-cultural issues are discussed, and the positive
reinterpretation technique and the behavioral instructional method are
illustrated. ((c) 1999 APA/PsycINFO, all rights reserved)

ABSTRACT: Contends that one characteristic of Japanese psychiatry is to
actualize the traditional Japanese philosophy (i.e., mutual welfare). Without
understanding this philosophy, there is no effective psychiatric treatment for
Japanese. The current status of drug therapy, a comparative study of Morita
therapy and psychoanalysis, classification of the mental patients and trends in
mental illnesses, and methodological problems in the psychiatric treatment of
Asians are discussed in this context. A dynamic therapeutic method is proposed
that emphasizes the importance of careful analyses of (1) the treatment
structure, (2) the characteristics of the patient^therapist relationship, (3)
the psychological structure of the patient's family, and (4) the characteristics
of the patient's identity in relation to the patient's mother. ((c) 1999

ABSTRACT: Describes Morita therapy, a Japanese cognitive)ehavioral therapy that
aims toward clients' acceptance of the self-actualizing and existential meaning
of anxiety (i.e., the fear of death and failure), instead of trying to resist or
control anxiety symptoms. The positive reinterpretation technique attempts to
mobilize clients' energy from egocentric self-preocccupations to productive and
constructive action-taking. A case illustration is presented of a 35-yr-old
female death-anxious client with paroxysmal anxiety reactions who was
successfully treated in a single Morita session; successful maintenance

ABSTRACT: Using a multiple baseline design across 2 target problems (fear of
speaking in groups and fear of approaching strangers), therapeutic changes
associated with brief (3-session) Morita therapy (MT) in a socially anxious
female (aged 42 yrs) were examined. MT is a Japanese therapy for anxiety-related
problems. Changes regarding both problems were observed after intervention and
in the follow-up phase in the S's ratings on acceptance of anxiety, problem
severity, and effectiveness in coping with anxiety problems. Qualitative
information provided by the S indicated a lasting therapeutic impact of
Morita-based interpretation of anxiety and confrontation. Suggestions are given
for future single-case experimental research on MT. (French abstract) ((c) 1999

ABSTRACT: Describes Morita therapy as being centered around positive
reinterpretation of anxiety in order to stimulate attentional, attitudinal, and
behavioral change in self-preoccupied anxious clients. It promotes clients'
behavioral commitment to constructive and productive activities. The
shinkeishitsusho disposition is regarded as a combination of predispositional
nervousness and hypersensitivity and learned and habituated cognitive patterns
of anxious self-preoccupation. The aim of the therapy is not to reject the
nervous disposition but to modify clients' dysfunctional cognitive and
behavioral patterns to reduce unproductive self-preoccupation. The therapy
promotes clients' acceptance of their predispositional nervous sensitivity and
anxiousness, not as personal weaknesses but as potentially functional and
constructive qualities as they are redirected toward concrete tasks and
realistic action-taking. Therapeutic progress is thus initiated when clients
take a positive v!

to practical activities for productive purposes. Similarities and differences
between Morita therapy and rational-emotive therapy are noted. (39 ref) ((c)

ABSTRACT: The relationship between urinary excretion of catecholamines during
sleep and sleep disturbance was examined in 4 healthy 25-26 yr old males who
were confined to bed for 1 wk under an entrained condition. This experiment was
performed to investigate the psychophysiological bases of Morita Therapy, a
method of Japanese psychotherapy that involves long, absolute bed rest.
Polysomnographic recordings were made throughout the period of continuous bed
rest. All Ss showed a negative correlation between sleep efficiency and
epinephrine excretion. Norepinephrine excretion correlated negatively with sleep
efficiency in only 1 S, and the group average correlation coefficient was not
significant. Circadian variations in sleep efficiency and catecholamine
excretion were observed. Findings suggest that urinary excretion of epinephrine
could serve as an effective indicator of sleep disturbance. ((c) 1999
