Bilberry

Bilberry" Latin Name
Vaccinium myrtillus

General Description
Herbalists have long valued the berries and leaves of the bilberry, a wild shrub that grows in Europe and North America. British pilots in World War II ate bilberry jam before flying night missions, to enhance their night vision. Small laboratory studies since then have indicated that the berries help other eye problems, such as glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration (a common cause of blindness in adults). Bilberry's healing effects probably stem from chemicals known as anthocyanosides in the berries.

Some European herbalists claim that bilberry anthocyanosides may protect the arteries by reducing deposits that can lead to heart attacks, strokes and high blood pressure. Dried berries work directly on the small intestine and are used to treat diarrhea. Herbalists have also prescribed bilberry leaves to lower blood sugar in diabetics.
