Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome

(See also Sexually Transmitted Diseases)

DEFINITION: The occurrence of immune deficiency in previously healthy individuals. There is no specific therapy.

Anyone who develops generalized lympadenopathy (swollen lymph glands), unexplained weight loss, and thrush, should be suspected of having this syndrome. Persons at risk of having this syndrome should not donate blood. The AIDS virus invades the T-cells and multiplies, causing a breakdown in the body’s immune system, eventually leading to overwhelming infection and/or cancer, with ultimate death. Many of those who die from AIDS have respiratory illnesses that the immune system is not able to fight. At this time, there is no cure for AIDS. 80% of those diagnosed with full-fledged AIDS since 1984 have already died. Many people who are carriers of the virus are not even aware that they have it. They spread the virus primarily through sexual contact or through the sharing of needles during intravenous drug use. When the virus is taken into the body, the white cells can not kill it. AIDS is also passed from mothers with the virus to children during birth. When the virus becomes active, some of the symptoms are non-specific and variable. They include; fever, fatigue, loss of appetite and weight, swollen lymph nodes, diarrhea, night sweats, skin disorders, and enlarged liver and/or spleen. The first sign may be a tongue that is coated with white bumps. This is oral Candidiasis, or thrush. Candidiasis indicates a compromised immune system.

None known. At this time, building up the immune system is the best defense for the potential AIDS victim. Correct diet, appropriate supplements, exercise, proper environment, and correct mental out-look all play significant roles in keeping the immune system working adequately. Check with your doctor for diagnosis and new developments in therapy.

Never share a needle with drug users. Condoms, along with spermicide, should be used (condoms are 90% effective). This disease is highly contagious. The Journal of the American Medical Association suggests that you protect yourself with condoms. Condoms should be used, but they are no guarantee of protection against venereal diseases! Check with your doctor!

Do not smoke! Stay away from those who do! Eliminate alcohol, caffeine, colas, sugar and sugar products, as well as red meat.

Diet should consist of 75% raw foods plus seeds, nuts, and grains. Lots of fresh air, rest, and sunshine. A lack of quality protein and adequate calories in the diet is a common reason for immune deficiency. Increase intake of fresh fruits and vegetables.
