The Sound of Stings -- page 2

Spruce was chosen for the top on a purely asthetic and traditional basis. This instrument is designed to use the piezo electric effect pickups that are placed between the individual string saddles and the bridge. Spruce is very strong for its weight, thus supports the bridge with minimal vibration. Where the traditional top is intended to move, this motion only serves to add distortion, and dampening to a piezo electric instrument. The spruce is custom cut and selected by Portland Tone Woods, then bookmatched and glued by myself. It is VERY thick, and yet, will permit solo practice unamplified.

When folks speak of tone, many times they are refering to the distortions added by the sound board, box, neck, and string cross talk. When I speak of tone, I mean the sound of strings set to motion by the players hands. The whole reason for being (of the instrument) is simply to hold the strings. Light accoustic instruments dance from the slightest vibration, making them sensitive. Electric instruments are just the opposite, they should resist the urge to make noise by being solid and tight, letting the energy of the string stay in the string. Piezo elements are VERY bright, like a fine classic guitar body, they reproduce every nuaince and subtlety of performance. Unlike a fine classic guitar, this instrument adds nothing of itself. -Frank
