Game Basics for Beginners:

  • SAVE YOUR GAME WHENEVER YOU CAN! This cannot be stressed enough. You never know what lies up around the next bend...
  • Talk to everyone several times. Some characters don't always let you know everything the first time that you speak to them.
  • Major events in the game often change what some characters say and do. It is the wise Final Fantasy player that speaks to people in villages or towns again after a critical event occurs.
  • After obtaining a vehicle, make sure that you leave it in a safe place. Cloud and his friends move from place to place quickly and it is too easy to get cut off from your transportation. Don't always ride Chocobos. The battles that are fought while roaming around are necessary for building your level.
  • ITEM TIPS:
  • Organize your inventory! You dont want to waste time during a battle looking for something that you desperately need.
  • Don't buy useless items. Most status effects only last untill the end of the battle. Don't waste precious Gil on items that cure these effects.
  • Look for special items that appear. Power Source, Magic Source, Luck Source, Mind Source and Guard Source are very important items. Each source permanetly raises one of your character's statistics.
  • WEAPONS & ARMOR:
  • Always equip new armor and weapons. This way, your team will be at their strongest. However; sometimes the strongest weapon is not always the best choice. Look to see the Materia Growth rate and how much Materia it can hold.
  • Your armor and accessories can seriously affect the outcome of a battle. For example, an enemy that uses Fire attacks will have trouble harming someone equipped with a Fire Ring. These items enable your party to use normally damaging spells for healing purposes.
  • Choose weapons and armor that best fit the roles that you have choosen for a character. Fighters need less Matera than magic users. Utilize the best weapons and armor on fighters for defensive purposes.
  • MATERIA & SPELLS:
  • Buy more than one important Materia. Materias like Life and Cure are worth shelling out the extra Gil for.
  • All is the most valuable Materia. It can help eliminate multiple enemies by attacking with the paired Materia to all of the enemies. It can also cure the whole party at once.
  • Each Materia gives the equipped character certain bonuses or penalties. Usually, the magic points increase while the hit points decrease. This may not always be the case, and it is best to check out each characters status after equipping Materia.
  • Summon Materia is often difficult to find. Search everything and everywhere. For example, the summon Titan is found on the blown apart Gongaga reactor. If you can't enter one point, return later and the path may have opened.
  • Some of the most valuable spells cause no damage at all and are commonly overlooked. If you really want to be a master at Final Fantasy VII, learning how to effectively use Materia like Time and Mystify are essential. I will go over Materia combinations on another page.

Battle Tips:

Characters equipped with short range weapons inflict less damage when placed in the back ranks. It is always to the best if these characters are placed in the front ranks and given less Materia. See my section on the detailed Character Desciption to find out the best rank for each character.

You can only hit some enemies with long range weapons. These enemies are mainly bosses. Even if your strongest weapon is of close range, keep a long range weapon in your inventory and equip it in these cases.

Each player will progress through the game at a different speed. Depending upon how quickly you find your way around, it may be necessary to fight battles around a village to raise your level and strength, and rest at an inn when necessary.

Try to focus one character's attention on a single enemy untill that enemy is destroyed. This way, your team can hit for the most damage, and recieve the less amount in return.

Be sure to use plenty of defensive magic in lieu of strong armor. A solid barrier is sometimes more effective than a strong piece of armor.

When being attacked from behind, you may want to switch ranks. By doing so, this places your back rant fighters back in the back, and your front line fighters back in the front. Always remember to press L1 and R1 if you are being attacked from behind. The enemy causes substantial amounts of damage if your character is not facing it.
