Isis

I know very little about Isis. I do know that they released 3 albums, one self-titled debut on Buddah, one called Ain't No Backin' Up Now which had tunes produced by both Allen Toussaint and Randy Muller (Brass Construction), and my favorite, the introspective Breaking Through on United Artists (1977).
And I can bet this -- that Isis, the interracial all-female groove unit, is fully (well, partly) loaded with lesbian power. (Note: Leader Carol MacDonald stated in an interview that "most of (the band members) weren't gay" though she was confident about not being "in the closet" with her music.) I think that's cool--a lesbian funk band. I really can't be sure, but if anyone asks me how I come to this conclusion, I say the lyrics to "Bobbi & Maria" give it all away. (Not to mention those girl-girl illustrations in the second album.) Founded by Carol MacDonald, this groups sings, plays, and writes everything. And as the liner notes read for the third record, "Carol and her longtime companion have been turning stumbling blocks into stepping stones by hiring top female instrumentalists . . ." Well, what do you think? I think they're pretty cool.
