The ZAPATISTAS and GLOBALIZATION: Film and Speaker from Chiapas

STORM FROM THE MOUNTAIN
a Big Noise Film

Thursday, December 6, 2001 at 7:30 PM
La Pena Cultural Center
3105 Shattuck Avenue, Berkeley

Requested Donation $5 - $10 (Sliding Scale)

STORM FROM THE MOUNTAIN weaves the EZLN struggle for Autonomy and the March for Indigenous Rights into the context of globalization. Filmed in Chiapas and also along the route of this year’s historic March to Mexico City, STORM records interviews with indigenous people, activists and students about Autonomy and Globalization. Great shots of resistance at an Army camp.

After the Film, Chiapas development worker, Hilary Klein, will talk about the Plan Puebla-Panama (PPP) and a new phase in the Zapatista struggle. The PPP is Mexico’s plan to prepare Chiapas and all of Southern (indigenous) Mexico for the FTAA by privatizing communal lands and globalizing Chiapas with funding from the World Bank, the IMF and the IDB.

All proceeds benefit Chiapas communities

(A)Wake for Democracy

On December 12, 2000, five U.S. Supreme Court Justices betrayed us and abrogated the Constitution by Usurping Our Right to Vote and Appointing their Choice as President of the United States.

(A)Wake for Democracy is a vigil to remind the felonious five we will continue to protest the illegal action which initiated the slide into the current assault on our civil rights and the continuing infringement of the Bill of Rights.

Please join us on December 12, 2001 to light a candle of hope for true Voter Reform and to remind Americans that when the Supreme Court 5 usurped our right to vote, it took the first step toward the loss of democracy.
Shine the Light of Justice for American Voters

WHERE: Oakland Federal Building
1301 Clay - between 13th and 14th Streets
2 blocks from the 12th Street Bart
DATE & TIME: Wednesday, December 12 at 5 pm

***This vigil is not sponsored by any organization. It is being organized by people - just like you - who have never "rabble-roused" before. We are appalled that a year has passed and none of our political representatives nor organizations appear to be marking this anniversary of mourning for the loss of the basic democratic right to elect our government officials. If you have connections to news media, know of groups that could join us, or can help make signs and/or leaflets, please email us at citizk@qwest.com.

4...The New Holy Alliance

From: "Joseph One" joseph_one@hotmail.com
Subject: The New Holy Alliance
Date: Wed, 28 Nov 2001 22:05:51 -0800

THE NEW HOLY ALLIANCE

URI AVNERY - After the downfall of Napoleon, the rulers of the continent decided to set up an insurmountable wall to any further aspirations of national and social liberation. In 1815 the Czar of all the Russians, the Emperor of Austria, and the King of Prussia signed an agreement, which they called the Holy Alliance, to institute the rule of God in Europe.

Abusing the name of the mild and vaguely socialist rabbi from Nazareth, they created in reality an international mafia of the iron fist. Wherever an oppressed people dared to raise its head in rebellion, all the rulers of Europe would band together, one for all and all for one, to help their threatened colleague. The Russians, for example, sent troops to squash the Hungarian and Italian rebellions against Austria; the secret services of all cooperated against the socialists and anarchists. Almost all the rulers of the continent joined the Alliance, as did England in practice, without doing so formally. The Pope, vicar of Christ, did not, and neither did the Ottoman Sultan, who, not being a devout Christian, had to oppress his many peoples without outside help.

Henry Kissinger, one of the modern admirers of the alliance and its major statesman, the Austrian Prince Metternich, credits it with maintaining order in Europe for many decades. Less morally-handicapped historians might point out that this unholy coming-together of reactionary princes held up the progress of Europe throughout the 19th century, denying liberty to many peoples and allowing narrow-minded kings and aristocrats to hold on to their privileges against far more productive and forward looking social forces. Nothing very "holy" about that.

Under the umbrella of the War Against Terror, a new Holy Alliance is in the making. George W. Bush is now the supreme judge who decides who is a terrorist and who is not, as once a mayor of Vienna decided who is a Jew. The inherent danger of this development is that the new alliance will hold up the most needed reform of the 21st century: the narrowing of the gap between North and South, the rich and the poor nations.

The abominable outrages of Osama bin Laden and his ilk may be seen, in times to come, as the first manifestation of the coming fight of the teeming billions of deprived and oppressed members of mankind against the privileged few, who almost literally drown in their own fat. The timely recognition of this problem and a determined efforts to deal with it, while there still is time, may prevent an imminent world-wide disaster. Fighting for the unlimited Western hegemony and monopoly of the world's riches, camouflaged as anti-terrorism, will lead to a world-wide catastrophe in the future.

Of course, there are lots of entertainment guides floating around, but unless you read and subscribe to every one, you will miss some great events highlighted in our quite selective listings. Each Thursday we will e-mail you a couple of events for each day of the coming week. We stay on top of interesting readings at local bookstores, new political films, radio interviews, and benefit concerts. We'll also often include a recommendation for some of the best television. It could be a movie, a documentary, or an interview on television worth watching or taping for later viewing. Nowhere else will you find selective television picks.

Caspian Pipeline Skirts Trouble Spots

Caspian pipeline skirts trouble spots
By HIL ANDERSON, UPI Chief Energy Correspondent

Dignitaries from around the world gathered at a Russian tanker port on the Black Sea Tuesday to mark the grand opening of a 900-mile pipeline that has thrown open the door to the vast oilfields of the volatile Caspian Sea region.

The pipeline was built in a little more than a year by the Caspian Pipeline Consortium and has been operational at a rate of about 600,000 barrels per day for more than a month. It links the huge Tenzig field of western Kazakhstan to the seaport of Novorossiysk.

While probably not the most direct route to the open sea, the CPC route runs well north of Afghanistan and skirts the troubled Russian republic of Chechnya.

"This pipeline will strengthen international energy security by adding more than a million barrels of oil a day to global supply, and by creating new jobs and billions of dollars in revenue," said U.S. Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham, one of a number of high-ranking officials from the United States, Russia and Kazakhstan who attended Tuesday's ceremony in Novorossiysk.

Novorossiysk has been a major tanker terminal for Russian crude exports for many years, however it was not the only choice for the terminus of a crude pipeline from the Caspian.

It turned out to be the safest and most expedient investment for the consortium, which spent about $2.65 billion on the project.

During the 1990s, the United States was anxious to see increased amounts of Caspian oil reaching the world market in order to further dilute the clout of OPEC and other major producers. The Caspian has as much as 34 billion barrels of proven reserves and much larger potential reserves, about a quarter of what the Middle East holds and larger than the reserves in the United States and North Sea, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

The trick, however, was finding a politically secure route for the oil to take from the landlocked sea to open waters where it could be hauled to virtually anywhere in the world.

The most obvious route for a pipeline would be through the short route through Iran to the Persian Gulf, or through Afghanistan to the Pakistani coast -- both of which presented the chance that unfriendly governments could shut down the pipeline in order to press a political agenda with the west.

U.S. sanctions against Iran and its refusal to recognize the Taliban in Afghanistan essentially made Novorossiysk the only choice for the oil companies that would invest huge amounts of money in the Caspian.

The CPC is made up of companies from the Russia, Kazakhstan and Europe as well as the U.S. companies Mobil Caspian Pipeline and Chevron Caspian Pipeline Consortium Co. The Russian Federation holds 24-percent of the CPC while Kazakhstan and Oman also own stakes.

Executives Tuesday portrayed the CPC project as just the first of many international projects in the region that was thrown open by the collapse of the Soviet Union.

"This achievement comes at a time of increased partnership between the U.S., Russia, and Kazakhstan," said ChevronTexaco Chairman Dave O'Reilly. "CPC is a bellwether project for successful international cooperation and demonstrates the confidence the international business community has to invest in Russia and Kazakhstan."

U.S. Commerce Secretary Don Evans said earlier this autumn that the CPC pipeline "tells the world that the United States, Russia, and Central Asian states are cooperating to build prosperity and stability in this part of the world."

Caspian crude will have to transit the narrow Bosporus to the Mediterranean Sea, making Europe its closest market. A pipeline through Iran or Afghanistan might make Caspian more economical for North American and Asian markets, however any new oil on the market helps keep world prices at reasonable levels.

"Greater energy security through a more diverse supply of oil for global markets -- these are key elements of President Bush's National Energy Policy," Abraham said in a plug for his boss. "The CPC pipeline is a clear example of that policy in action, in an international setting."

Some analysts and critics of the U.S. campaign in Afghanistan have theorized that the war against the Taliban is actually aimed at installing a regime in Kabul that will open the door for construction of another Caspian pipeline, however Tuesday's ceremony in Novorossiysk may be a signal that there is no rush.

"There is no longer a shortage of oil export capacity in Kazakhstan," Cambridge Energy Research Associates said in a recent assessment of the feasibility of an Afghan pipeline. "The need for a major new oil pipeline via Afghanistan or any other route will not reemerge until around 2010."

The construction of the CPC pipeline to Novorossiysk turned out to be the right choice for the United States while Afghanistan's failure to land a lucrative pipeline project will be chalked up as another misstep by the Taliban.

-- Narco News Announces LIVE FROM THE ANDES coverage to begin this week as we move the newsroom to South América

Narco News

Narco News Commentary: Bolivian President Jorge Quiroga stepped off American Airlines Flight 628 at 7:31 p.m. last night at Washington´s Reagan National Airport for four days of meetings, including a scheduled session with President George W. Bush on Thursday, December 6th. Today he meets with the Organization of American States. Later, with DEA boss Asa Hutchinson, and high functionaries of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund.

He leaves behind a country completely destroyed by his own surrender of national sovereignty to the demands of the US government. As the Milenio Foundation reported this week, the US-imposed "zero coca" policy has already caused Bolivia annual losses of $655 million dollars and 59,000 jobs.

Last Thursday, transport workers paralyzed the country with a 24 hour blockade and strike, and threatened to escalate to a 48 hour strike soon, and then an indefinite national strike. The clock ticks on the deadline of early December posed by business leaders who are threatening, too, a national strike and boycott of federal taxes. Now, according to reports we translate today, other social sectors from the nation's doctors to even the rank-and-file police are threatening to join the blockades and strikes.

Tomorrow, the social sector that has been the spark of this chain of events, the 35,000 coca growing families of the Chapare region, will begin anew their campaign of highway blockades that have twice paralyzed the country.
The Quiroga regime has sent 4,000 troops to try and keep the major highway unblocked. The regime's policy is reduced to its last refuge: Brute force.

The U.S. press has been silent throughout the tumult of recent weeks; the hard news is inconvenient, because it disproves years of propaganda stating that Bolivia is a "success story" in the US-imposed "war on drugs."

Even Washington Post columnist Marcela Sanchez, in a Friday puff piece about President Quiroga, chose to withhold the hard news of what is really happening in Bolivia from her readers. Tomorrow, Narco News will offer a detailed response to Sanchez's error-laden column, and we will detail an announcement that we make today:

ANNOUNCEMENT BY NARCO NEWS:

The United States press is not doing its job. US correspondents in Latin America remain mute before the social upheaval that has profound consequences for the war on drugs.

Thus, beginning this week, Narco News will launch a new project: "Live from the Andes." The newsroom is heading to South America, to break the information blockade and offer direct live reports at Narco News on the immediate history shaking our América.

12...Endless Negotiations - Pacifica Campaign

Date: Mon, 3 Dec 2001 01:39:53 -0500
From: Pacifica Campaign pacifiacampaign@yahoo.com
Subject: Endless Negotiations

December 2, 2001
From Juan Gonzalez
Coordinator Pacifica Campaign

Dear Friends,

It's been two weeks since the Washington National Board meeting approved by unanimous vote a plan to end the crisis now crippling the Pacifica Radio network. Even though some in the Pacifica reform movement were unhappy with the accord, the 5-5-5 deal promised to mark an imperfect but important turning point in the history of the network.

We now learn that this second agreement is now being renegotiated by the board majority and is not at all settled. This is outrageous.

There have already been two negotiations that reached agreement on a transitional solution. First, there were the Bay Area mediation sessions where Pacifica board chair Bob Farrell and board member Marion Barry, claiming to speak for the board majority, reached a settlement with litigants for the reform movement. Barry even trumpeted the deal on KPFA in early November.

That settlement was summarily rejected by intransigent board majority members who met in Washington over the Nov. 17 weekend, after which hours of new talks took place between dissident board members and those representing the majority. A new "agreement" was reached and unanimously approved.

For members of the Pacifica board majority to again hold up this second agreement by trying to get a better "deal" is taking things too far.

I can understand old board members not wanting to resign from the board without getting law suits against them dropped. But if they chose not to attend the board meeting or to participate by phone or proxy, that is their problem, not ours. Still, I am sure that if they wish to step down from the Pacifica Board, they will be dropped from all the lawsuits. If others, like Pacifica board secretary John Murdock, have had a change of heart, and wish to renegotiate while the network collapses, he too should just resign.

We in the staff of the Pacifica Campaign will not sit by watching these people fiddle away as the network falls apart. As you know by our messages to the movement, I and the campaign staff have been big supporters of negotiations -- but never endless negotiations. And certainly not negotiations which only lead to agreements which are not honored by the board majority.

If in the next few days the entire Pacifica Board does not approve the transition plan as voted on at the Washington meeting (or a variation on that plan that acceptable to the reform movement), we will urge all supporters of the campaign to use whatever peaceful means are available to hold board members personally responsible for their inaction. We will resume fully the campaign to secure their immediate resignations.

In the coming days, we will be announcing new plans and new demonstrations against this reckless Board majority. If we have to picket them on Christmas Eve, Kwanza, Hanukah, or any other holiday, we will -- whatever it takes to get them to understand the time has come end this fight.

Onward,

Juan Gonzalez

14...National Call Congress Days - Dec. 4-5

Date: Mon, 03 Dec 2001 02:41:18 -0600
From: "Robert P. Kolb" admin@73.org
Subject: National Call Congress Days Dec. 4 and 5

Call Congress to make your voice heard on two urgent working family issues.

On Dec. 4 join the National Call-In Day to Stop Fast Track. Call your U.S. representative on Dec. 4 and tell him or her that this is not the time for Fast Track trade authority. While thousands of working families are trying to rebuild their lives, it is outrageous to push controversial legislation that has already cost nearly 1 million manufacturing jobs and promises to cost many more.
Call your U.S. representative at 1-800-393-1082.

The next day, Dec. 5, make your voice heard again on the National Call-In Day for Worker Relief and help working families who suffer during the widening economic crisis. Call your senators and tell them to support a worker relief package that includes unemployment and health care benefits for laid-off workers. Since Sept. 11 more than 750,000 layoffs have been announced.
You can call your senators at 1-800-718-1008.

--------------------------------------------------

When we all join together to make our voice heard, we can make a difference for working families. Click on the link below now to tell your friends, family and co-workers how they can participate in these call-in days.

Please read, and pass this on to any one you think could be interested.

Dear Friends,

Human Rights Accompaniment Volunteers Needed in Colombian Peace Community

The Fellowship of Reconciliation (FOR) is accepting applications for volunteers to accompany the Peace Community of San José de Apartadó, in Colombia's northern region of Urabá. San José de Apartadó is one of some 50 communities in Colombia that has taken an extraordinary and nonviolent stand against war, by refusing to support any armed actor involved in Colombia's decades-long conflict. The community has suffered terribly from political violence, mostly by paramilitary groups supported by the Colombian Army, and remains a principle obstacle to the paramilitary's expansion of its violent project in the Urabá and Chocó regions. In March 2001, the Peace Community, whose central settlement of San José is already accompanied by volunteers of Peace Brigades International, requested that the Fellowship of Reconciliation work to establish a long-term accompaniment presence in the nearby settlement of La Unión. La Unión is the agricultural center of the Peace Community, and has been victim to repeated paramilitary attacks.

In consultation with Colombian and international human rights organizations working with and living in the community, FOR has solidified its project mandate and developed the infrastructure to support the requested accompaniment of La Unión. FOR now seeks eager, committed, and skilled volunteers ready to actively support this living example of nonviolent resistance.

Fellowship of Reconciliation - TFLAC
Volunteer Job Description
Accompaniment Project in San José de Apartadó, Colombia

Volunteer Responsibilities:
The purpose of the accompaniment presence in San José de Apartadó is to assist in protecting the lives of the community, and by doing so, help to maintain open the space for human rights and for neutrality of the civilian population in the Colombian countryside. To this end, the volunteers seek, as far as possible within their resources to:

Offer nonviolent support and protective accompaniment to members and leaders of the San José community (especially in the settlement of La Unión), and to the Colombian organizations that accompany them, as they are threatened with violence from various sides.

… Identify what is happening in the country through direct observation and by listening to a wide range of viewpoints and experiences, respecting the need expressed by involved parties for confidentiality;

… Provide the outside world with a non-partisan analysis and reports of the situation as viewed from within the country or community;

… Provide accurate and timely information to the Fellowship of Reconciliation in cases of attack or threat against the community, to assist in directing international attention toward the need for human rights protection.

Volunteer Requirements:
…A clear understanding of and commitment to nonviolence, and to the value of bearing witness through an accompaniment project.

…Proficiency in both Spanish and English.

…A strong commitment to teamwork, both in terms of working with one or more other FOR volunteers in the field, and in relation to the TFLAC staff and committees.

…We seek volunteers who will commit to serve for at least six months.

…Maturity. We do not accept applicants younger than 21 years of age. The maturity of all prospective volunteers, regardless of age, will be evaluated.

…Resilience or the ability to work effectively under intense pressure and stress. It is recommended that volunteers cultivate habits of self-care to manage stress over extended periods of time.

…Sensitivity to and the ability to work with people of different cultures demonstrated through previous experience with people of another culture. Experience in the field is an asset, but is not required. Familiarity with rural communities is also helpful.

…Familiarity with consensus decision-making,

…A willingness to live simply.

…Ability to represent the project in a professional and appropriate manner, in a wide variety of settings.

…Ability to track and analyze information that is pertinent to the safety of volunteers, the need for external support, and/or the opportunities for enhancing the work.

…Ability to work with a computer, for word processing, e-mail, and basic maintenance of the computer itself.

…Reasonable proficiency with writing reports, summarizing information, and capturing stories through anecdotes or interviews, is highly recommended. Some familiarity with photography is recommended.

…The ability to keep basic accounts (bookkeeping) of expenses and transfers of funds.

…Other skills that may be useful but are not required include experience with first aid, translating and interpreting, cooking, and other skills of daily life.

…A good working knowledge of the current situation in Colombia is highly recommended.

…Volunteers are expected to do outreach in the United States to share their experience (speaking, writing) after service in Colombia.

…Because of the nature of this work, FOR does not accept Colombian nationals as volunteers for this project.

Financial Arrangements:
FOR covers living expenses (food, lodging, and travel when doing FOR work) in the field during the term of service (in addition to providing a small monthly stipend and some health insurance). Volunteers are strongly encouraged to raise money to assist with their personal expenses while serving on the team.

Training for Volunteers:
FOR will work with each volunteer to develop a training plan, which may include any or all of the following: FOR-led training sessions, attendance at the training sessions of other accompaniment organizations (such as Peace Brigades International), self-study plans, and attendance at conferences, classes or trainings on specific topics. In addition to training, each volunteer first will go through an interview process. The interview process is a mutual-discernment process to help the volunteer decide if serving in this project is a commitment he or she would like to make, and to help FOR determine if he or she is adequately prepared for the experience.

19...1939 and 2001, Herman Goering Quote Nails Today's Reality

From: "joe hill" aliun@hotmail.com

Subject: 1939 and 2001, Hermann Goering Quote Nails Today's Reality

1939 and 2001, Hermann Goering quote nails today's reality.

Why, of course, the people don't want war ... But after all it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship...Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger."
--Hermann Goering, Nazi leader, at the Nuremberg Trials after World War II

LATEST FROM SCRIPPS-HOWARD NEWS SERVICE and an appeal for action!

It is not a stretch to wonder if this White House is up to something that it doesn't want known 12 years from now or anytime thereafter.

[A direct quote from the piece carried by Scripps Howard News Service.
Re: Bush's sealing of presidential records for the first time in U.S. history]

The time for action is NOW. All Americans of conscience must consider this. . . before it is too late. I have devised freely given kits to empower you and others to DEMAND inquiry into 9-11 and possible government collusion.

If powers that be in the U.S. had something to do with 9-11, they can keep us endlessly busy putting our proverbial "Dutch Boy" fingers in the dike, with endless challenges to all the sacred freedoms American government and others in the world were founded upon.

All they would have to do is send a bit more anthrax or allow another terrorist attack now and then and eventually America will just give away liberty bit by bit . . . for safety.

UNLESS we DEMAND INQUIRY INTO 9-11 and the disturbing facts emerging in mainstream media . . . the damn is going to break no matter how hard we work to plug the leaks.

For an Activist Kit, send an email to findtruth38@hotmail.com with "Send Kit" in the subject, and it will be sent freely and immediately to help you to help others to take a stand until a thundrous wave of DEMAND FOR INQUIRY echoes through the world.

God bless, and Godspeed,

Bill

p.s. the 8 disturbing reports are listed below so you can refresh your memory of just how bizarre our media and government are acting for not looking into these reports more deeply.

WHY DID MAINSTREAM MEDIA "VOW TO GET TO THE BOTTOM OF THE INSIDER TRADING THAT PROFITED OFF THE 9-11 HORROR," AND THEN SUDDENLY . . . DROPPED THE STORY?

The 9 DISTURBING FACTS:

- The Bush Administration forced the FBI to back off of the Bin Laden investigation months before 9-11. [BBC transcript BUSH BIN LADEN HIDDEN AGENDA!!!] Click Here!

- The CIA station chief in Dubai met with Bin Laden 7 weeks before 9-11, and at a time when Bin Laden was supposedly "wanted" by the CIA.
(German Trans.) Click Here!

- INSIDER TRADING PROFITS off of 9-11 were frenzied over by the US media when they thought it was Arab terrorists . . . but then the story mysteriously died. Until, the UK Independent reveals that it leads to a firm chaired by the 3rd highest man in the CIA (and stranger still is that $2.5 million of the "winnings" are still unclaimed (see below for URL to entire story).

Info confirmed by Independent Newspaper in UK:

- ABC News.com's May/2001 story resurfaces about how the US Joint Chiefs of Staff have in the past ACTUALLY DESIGNED a plan to committ domestic terror on Americans to whip them into a war hysteria, to support war efforts by the govt.

[The National Security Archive has a PDF version of the Operation Northwoods plan, which author James Bamford says "may be the most corrupt plan ever created by the U.S. government." It can be found at the following URL:] Click Here!

- Strangely Anthrax is sent to (not the President, or Republicans) but to the top Democrat and to the media. A foriegn terrorist would probably want to "divide" the country, not unite the opposition and the media in the war effort.

- New Science Journal says Anthrax sent to Daschle is NOT Russian or Iraqi, but likely US military strain.

- San Francisco Chronicle reports, the anthrax strain produced in US University is destroyed on ok of FBI (they had studied this for years, some at university question the timing of the destruction of those anthrax spores . . . right now of all times (?))

- Bush Admin. declares they will "seal the records of presidents beginning with Father Bush/Reagans (an act never before done in US presidential history)." AND What bizarre timing. In the midst of a war and an economic disaster -- they find the time and "the desire" to seal the records of the Reagan/Bush admin, just as info is surfacing about Bush/Bin Laden connections from years back. (Details in Scripps-Howard News Service, appearing in Chico, CA paper on 11/5/2001)

It is not a stretch to wonder if this White House is up to something that it doesn't want known 12 years from now or anytime thereafter.

20...The Enigma of Allies and Enemies - Mumia Abu-Jamal

Subject: The Enigma of Allies and Enemies - Mumia Abu-Jamal - Nov. 1
Date: Sat, 01 Dec 2001 20:33:24

The Enigma of Allies and Enemies
Mumia Abu-Jamal
Nov 01

What a difference a month makes!

As the United States continues to bombard the feudal state of Afghanistan, with the gleeful (yet anxious!) connivance of a bevy of assorted junior partners, the playlist of who's who seems to get rewritten by the hour.
Unperturbed by the Churchillian axiom that a nation has no permanent friends, nor permanent enemies, but only permanent interests, the U.S. has cast a wide, imperial net, to scoop up a bucket-full of buddies.

The resultant quasi- 'Coalition' is a reflection of the wide and deep contradictions that emerge, when one considers what the U.S. announces is its foreign policy, and what it is in *realpolitik*. If the U.S. is the target of the "terrorists" because of 'its wonderful democracy' (as non-majority-elected President Bush suggests) why is it bundled up with nations that see democracy as a bad word?

Pakistan and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia are many things, but democracies they ain't!

Only one person voted for Gen. P. Musharraf to become President of Pakistan-- himself! Because he was General, his was the only vote that counted. In clear, unalloyed terms, Pakistan is a military dictatorship. Worse, it is an unstable state where upwards of 80% of its population support the Taliban of Afghanistan which exists, in part, because of the machinations of Pakistani military intelligence!

The Saudi Kingdom is, in essence, a theocracy, where the Royal Family rules with an iron hand, and where women aren't even allowed to drive! The Bin-Laden clan is one of the First Families of the kingdom, builders of many of the structures in the Islamic holy places of Mecca.

The Wahabbi sect of Islam promoted by the Royal House is but a variant of that practiced by the Taliban.

The madrassas in Pakistan (of which there are over 10,000) were, for the better part of two decades, training schools for the Taliban, and, in fact, educated perhaps 75% of it's leadership. Pakistan, being a desperately poor, post- colonial nation, cannot afford public education for its teeming young population. The madrassas therefore, being the only free schools in the region, are plush with students, who learn a thorough Koranic education, with history from an Islamic perspective.

The backers of the madrassas? Saudi Arabia.

"OK, Jamal - - - What's the point?", the thoughtful readers ask.

The point is that the two best buds of the USA -- Ally No. 1 - Pakistan; and Ally No. 2 -- Saudi Arabia, -- are the prime movers, backers, supporters, and sustainers of the so-called 'enemy': the Taliban.

If *80%* of Pakistanis support the Taliban (in a region where one's ethnicity or tribal allegiances may go deeper than religion!) what can any government -- even a military dictatorship do to suppress that statement?
The American bombing campaign is sowing the pregnant seeds of civil war in Pakistan, and rolling instability in the whole region.

For the closer the US nestles to Pakistan, the more nervous the (democratic!) Republic of India gets. The two nations are already involved in an on-again, off-again, shooting war over the northern Indian (or is it western Pakistani?) province of Kashmir.

Kashmir, with its overwhelmingly Muslim population has been agitating for homerule, and national independence for decades. To the Indians, Kashmiri militants are "terrorists." To the Pakistanis, they look a lot like "freedom fighters." (Isn't that the same thing that was said about the Taliban when they were *mujahadeen* fighting the Soviets?).

The US charges into a thicket, knowing neither its enemies, nor its real friends.

It is a time of danger, that holds dangers not just for the US, nor even the region: but the world.

21...Six Students Arrested at Stanford

Date: Thu, 29 Nov 2001 14:31:45 -0800 (PST)
From: Owen Cen Li owenli23@stanford.EDU
Subject: 6 Students Arrested

PLEASE FORWARD WIDELY

Dear Members of the Stanford Community,

It is currently 2:15PM. Concerned members of the Stanford community have rallied, marched, been physically assaulted, and gotten arrested today to combat an unfair and unjust practice: the proposed subcontracting of hospital workers.

As many of you know, the Stanford Hospital's VP of General Services, Lou Sakson, has pledged to sign an agreement "as soon as he can" to subcontract out housekeeping jobs at the hospital, declaring that he will continue to do so without regard for worker's rights or dignity.

Today, 8 students, co-chairs of the Asian American Student Association, Pilipino American Student Union, Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano De Aztlan, Peace and Justice Coalition at Stanford, the Student Labor Action Committe, and their members, confronted Lou Sakson in his office, demanding that the Stanford Hospital, whose practices we all have an undeniable stake in, does not begin to engage in a labor practice that exploits workers and denies them the right to organize.

Sakson has shown no regard for the fact that poverty wages will be paid and benefits denied, meaning workers will have to take on 2-3 jobs to have enough to eat. He believes that $8/hr. is a living wage in Palo Alto. He does not care that subcontracted workers will not be trained adequately to protect workers and patients, that using a subcontractor means high turnover and low worker loyalty/investment, or that in the past, subcontracting at the hospital has actually INCREASED, rather than decreased costs.

He has shown no interest in listening to concerned voices. He refuses to consider halting subcontracting or stopping the practice until a review board can be established that determines whether the practice can be justified. He has also failed to explain the logic in signing a contract that will represent less than 1% of budget cuts, but will affect all the workers 100%. This situation is unacceptable, especially in an institution of higher learning, especially for a socially conscious and racially-conscious community.

In an overwhelming show of unity and support for the 1/3 Asian American, 1/3 Chicano/Latino, and 1/3 African American hospital housekeeping workers and SEIU Local 715 union, 8 Students confronted Sakson in his office.
After trying to give us the runaround, Sakson and hospital security resorted to physical assault when we tried to stop him from shutting his door on us. SLAC Co-Coordinator Monica Henestroza, who put her arm in the door to stop it from being closed, was personally assaulted by Sakson, who continued pushing against her caught arm even as she screamed in pain.
Mecha co-Chair Leticia Ramirez was also abused by hospital security, who attempted to violently pull her away from the door entrance by grabbing her aggressively and pulling. Other students were also abused.

Meanwhile, more than one hundred students representing all segments of the Stanford community assembled in front of Memorial Auditorium in protest of the subcontracting practice at 12:30 PM. After about 25 minutes, they marched to the hospital.

This may be hard to believe but it is all on videotape. From the first delegation team, five of the eight students were arrested by Police, while one delegate videotaped the entire scene and the two other delegates of the second team reported back to the more than 100 students who had assembled outside after hearing of the rally in the last two days. Arrested students include our AASA chair, MEChA co-chair, a SCPJ officer, and SLAC officers.

Currently, 100 students are rallying outside President Hennessy's office in Building 10 of the main quad, demanding that Hennessy, who has been negligent in taking responsibility for the subcontracting issue and answering student, worker, faculty, staff, and general community member demands that this unjust process be stopped and reviewed.

STUDENTS DO NOT NEED TO BE ARRESTED IN ORDER TO BRING ATTENTION TO AN EXPLOITATIVE, UNJUST, AND DISCRIMINATORY PRACTICE.

As students, we promise that if our voices and the voices of the community are not heard, we will be forced to escalate. We are all responsible for the workers on our campus. Our ties to the workers of Stanford Hospital are undeniable. To not speak up for what is right would be a tremendous act of violence.

Start mobilizing now. Call your parents, your friends, your acquaintences, the press. More details on mobilization will follow.

in struggle,

The Stanford Community

23...Rent Control Under Attack in Berkley, Ca

From: Bill Bogert hi_there@dnai.com
Reply To: Rob Wrenn robwrenn@home.com
Subject: ALERT - Rent Control under attack
Date: Fri, 30 Nov 2001 18:24:41 -0800

Dear rent control supporters,

Please come to the special City Council meeting this Tuesday, Decewmber 4 at 7.pm. which will focus on the General Plan Housing Element and housing policies. It is vital that progressives turn out in force. Numbers matter; everyone needs to be there. IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT PROGRESSIVES TURN OUT IN FORCE. People should get there early, especially if you want a seat. Please pass the word to other rent board members and rent control supporters.

The Council moderates are trying to delay adoption of the General Plan so that they have time to mobilize mobs to come out and oppose the most positive and progressive features of the plan. They mobilized 100 people to come to the last Council meeting to attack the Progressive majority's redistricting plan and I expect them to try to mobilize people to oppose the plan's housing policies as well.

I and other planning commissioners and Progressive councilmembers are trying to turn out people to call on the Council to stick to its schedule to adopt the Plan by the end of this year. Staff supports this and this is what has been planned. However, Polly Armstrong and the moderates want to delay everything by several months.

Councilmember Mim Hawley is emerging as the leader of an attack on rent control. She is proposing that the provision in the Plan calling for the repeal of Costa-Hawkins be dropped. She also wants to change background sections of the Plan to include criticism of rent control She is also saying that the plan has too much of an emphasis on affordable housing and housing targeted at low-income people. She doesn't want the Plan to call for affordable housing on the Oxford lot and the Ashby BART air rights. She is proposing lots of changes that weaken the plan's commitment to rent control and affordable housing.

The Council has had ample time to review the plan; the time has come to pass it. Progressive councilmembers need to know that they will have lots of backing if they stick to their guns and don't give in to calls for delay and for watering down and eliminating the best features of the plan.

26...Lori Update

From: "Mark Berenson"
Reply-To: gtaylor@freelori.org
Subject: Lori Update -- Nov. 30
Date: Fri, 30 Nov 2001 14:15:13 -0500

November 30, 2001

To: All Friends and Supporters of Lori Berenson

LORI BEGINS SEVENTH YEAR OF WRONGFUL INCARCERATION

Today is a particularly sad day for us – it marks the sixth anniversary of Lori’s arrest on a public bus in downtown Lima. It is incredible to think that Lori has spent six full years – that is 2, 193 days, practically one in every five of her life -- behind bars, mostly under horrendous and sometimes life-threatening conditions. Her appeal to Peru’s Supreme Court following her June 20 sentencing has not yet been looked at. By Peruvian “law,” which is rarely followed, the appeals process is supposed to take two weeks. More than five months ago, following the sentencing, the U.S. State Department urged Peru to expedite the appeals process but, instead, our Peruvian ally has chosen to “slow it down.”

Tonight we will be thinking of Lori, her courage, and her strength of conviction. We know she is innocent and we will continue in our efforts to bring her home so that this is the last November 30th that she spends incarcerated.

HOT OFF THE PRESS -- UPDATED VERSION OF RHODA’S BOOK

An updated version of the book “Lori: My Daughter Wrongfully Imprisoned in Peru” has just been published in paperback by Northeastern University Press. This edition includes a new 45-page Epilogue recounting Lori’s civilian trial and the frustrations we faced as we followed the circus-like spectacle during the more than three months we lived in Lima.

The book can be purchased from Amazon or Barnes & Noble or ordered directly from the publisher at Northeastern University Press – all on the internet. For those of you who want to order a case of books as holiday gifts there is a 50% discount if ordered through the publisher. Please contact Jill Bahcall, Associate Director, Northeastern University Press, 360 Huntington Avenue, 416CP, Boston, MA 02115. Her telephone is (617) 373-5481, her fax is (617) 373-5483, her email is jbahcall@lynx.neu.edu and the website is < a href="http://www.nupress.neu.edu">here

MARK VISITS LORI AND THEY CELEBRATE THEIR BIRTHDAYS

On Sunday, November 18, Mark spent the day with Lori in Santa Monica de Chorrillos Prison, celebrating their birthdays – Lori’s was 32 on November 13 and Mark will be 60 on December 29 but won’t be returning to Peru before then. Mark brought in a large birthday cake that was shared with other prisoners and their visitors and also loads of summer clothing donated to the prisoners from some of Lori’s supporters in California.
