===========================================================
There is a nationwide epidemic of police brutality in the United States. The victims are overwhelmingly African American, Latino and other people of color.

STOLEN LIVES provides important and compelling exposures of the nationwide epidemic of police brutality and murder. People who've been killed, their families and loved ones, and communities under the gun speak through the pages and tell their stories. And they get a platform to speak out even more broadly.

Among people who don't deal with police brutality in their daily lives, this book shows that it's more than just a "few bad apples" or some "isolated incidents." Many such people will be moved to join the struggle against police brutality and stand with those under the gun when they see the shocking scope of this epidemic.

The STOLEN LIVES PROJECT is a joint project of the October 22nd Coalition to Stop Police Brutality, Repression, and the Criminalization of a Generation; the National Lawyers Guild and the Anthony Baez Foundation.

Arms train drivers plan next move

RAIL WORKERS in Motherwell, near Glasgow, have underlined why they refused to move a train carrying ammunition for use against Iraq last week. Their action should be an inspiration to everyone who opposes war. At a meeting of their Aslef union branch Motherwell train drivers discussed the stance taken by drivers working for the EWS rail company. The meeting agreed a statement which began:

"This Motherwell branch is totally opposed to any conflict with Iraq and the USA's seemingly headlong rush into war. We also applaud the Aslef leadership's stance in opposing the conflict. We are also proud of the EWS members at our branch who have intimated that they have grave reservations if required as part of their duties to drive Ministry of Defence trains at this time."

The statement pointed out that workers at other EWS depots could also be asked to move munitions trains. "We have no doubt that many of these drivers will have similar sentiments to ourselves." It concludes by demanding "that no EWS member is harassed, victimised or disciplined for taking this action". And "finally that we, as a trade union and individually, take every opportunity to oppose this conflict".

There are reports that EWS drivers in Scotland will be asked to move munitions again. With tens of thousands of troops now heading for the Gulf there will also be military convoys moving all across Britain in the coming week. We need to build every protest and every action against this war. And we must make sure the demonstration on Saturday 15 February in London is a huge outpouring of opposition to the war.

From: Mexico Solidarity Network
Subject: MSN TRAVELING EXHIBITION - AUTONOMIA EN REBELDIA

TRAVELING EXHIBITION - AUTONOMIA EN REBELDIA
http://zapatista.bard.edu Autonomia en Rebeldia is a collection of photographs taken during a delegation to the Zapatista Autonomous Municipality of Olga Isabel in Chiapas, Mexico in September 2002. The delegation was formed by the Mexico Solidarity Network in response to an escalation of violence towards the Zapatistas.

On August 26th Antonio Mejia Vasquez, the deacon and founder of the Zapatista Community, Akil, was killed by the paramilitary group Los Aguilaras. Today, 3 months later, the killers who have been identified by eye witnesses still roam free.

The idea behind this project (composed a web site (http://zapatista.bard.edu) and a traveling exhibition) is for it to act as a fundraiser. All photographs featured on the web site are for sale $35 each (16x20 inch, prints are from original negatives). After covering expenses, 2/3's of the money will go to the Autonomous Municipality of Olga Isabel and 1/3 will be put toward sending more college students to Zapatista Communities. Gift packages are also available upon request. If you would like to host the exhibition of 16 photographs featured on the web site in your community.

Subject: Labor Tuesday! for January 28, 2003 is posted. Dear Friends and Fellow Workers:

This month the AFL-CIO held an unprecedented meeting to talk about and hopefully do something about the declining numbers of union members. Our first posting this week takes a look at the problems facing would-be union organizers, and suggests a different starting point. Our second posting is about speed-up and its toll on the workforce, unionized or not. Mainstream economists hold that the U.S. must increase its productivity if the economy is to grow again. That doesn't sound like good news for a workforce that hard put to catch its breath, as it is. Our third posting is a contemporary account of the 1966 New York transit strike and a leadership "that didn't capitulate without a fight as they have done before."

This message forwarded by the Mexico Solidarity Network:
Civic Front for the Defense of the Casino de la Selva Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico January 28, 2003

Dear Friends, Compañeras and Compañeros:
We again appeal for your support and solidarity in our struggle against the brutality of the transnational corporation Costco, and ask for your help in a letter writing campaign addressed to Mexican President Vicente Fox, with copies to the governor of Morelos, Cuernavaca's municipal president, and Costco-Comercial Mexicana executives. Our struggle continues and focuses on not allowing Costco-Comercial Mexicana (in complicity with the neoliberal Mexican government) to impose upon us, through its box stores, a lifestyle which destroys our customs, culture, history, environment, and local economy.

Within the context of the International Week of Non Violence (January 27 - 31, 2003) we are also launching a Citizens' Week of Struggle and Fasting, in Cuernavaca. The support we are asking of you is twofold:

1. Help us by distributing the letter addressed to President Fox among your membership and other contacts with the request that as many people as possible sign it and send it. The letter is posted on our web site at: http://www.procasino.org

2. That you carry out boycott actions at Costco stores in your area. Further information about boycott strategy and suggested flyers is available at: http://www.mexicosolidarity.org/COSTCO_FLYER.pdf

We know that we are not alone in our struggle, and for that we give you our heartfelt thanks. This case is specifically about whether or not someone who was given an eviction notice before the law was passed can still be evicted. Of course EE says no, but we'll see what the judge says. We need to be present at this hearing to make sure they know we are watching! More details about time and place will come soon.

2. You may have heard that Just Cause is becoming a membership organization. It is an exciting change and we hope to get hundreds of folks (including you!) signed up as official JCO members within the first few months. We are sending out a VERY BIG MAILING on January 31st and we could use your help! Please come to the mailing party - FRIDAY, JANUARY 31st at our office, 5pm-8pm, 1920 Park Blvd. Near the lake. Dear Friends and Fellow Poets:

When I picked up my mail and saw the letter marked "The White House," I felt no joy. Rather I was overcome by a kind of nausea as I read the card enclosed:

"Laura Bush requests the pleasure of your company at a reception and White House Symposium on "Poetry and the American Voice" on Wednesday, February 12, 2003 at one o'clock Only the day before I had read a lengthy report on the President's proposed "Shock and Awe" attack on Iraq, calling for saturation bombing that would be like the firebombing of Dresden or Tokyo, killing countless innocent civilians."

I believe the only legitimate response to such a morally bankrupt and unconscionable idea is to reconstitute a Poets Against the War movement like the one organized to speak out against the war in Vietnam. I am asking every poet to speak up for the conscience of our country and lend his or her name to our petition against this war, and to make February12 a day of Poetry Against the War. We will compile an anthology of protest to be presented to the White House on that afternoon.

Please submit your name and a poem or statement of conscience to: kokua@olympus.net

There is little time to organize and compile. I urge you to pass along this letter to any poets you know. Please join me in making February 12 a day when the White House can truly hear the voices of American poets.

Political Twist: Unions Warn 4 Democrats

By Judy Sarasohn
Washington Post

Transport Unions Had Enough With The Union-busters?

An alliance of major transportation unions yesterday warned that they will refuse to give money at Democratic fundraisers hosted by four prominent Democrats who are leaders of an organization seeking to restrict collective bargaining rights in airline labor negotiations.

At a meeting with officials of the Democratic national, senatorial and congressional committees, Mike Ingrao, chief of staff of the AFL-CIO's Transportation Department, said, "We registered our dismay and disgust at former Democratic officeholders and party officials heading up a campaign to eliminate collective bargaining rights for airline workers."

The union leaders, who included AFL-CIO political director Karen Ackerman, said they will not support fundraisers hosted by Vic Fazio, a former House member who served as chairman of the Democratic Caucus; Don Foley, former executive director of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee; Neil Goldschmidt, former Oregon governor and U.S. secretary of transportation; and Charles S. Robb, former Virginia governor and senator.

All -- except Foley, who is a consultant -- are national co-chairmen of a group called Communities for Economic Strength Through Aviation (CESTA) that is seeking to change the Railway Labor Act of 1926 to replace collective bargaining and possible strikes with an arbitration process.

Talking to Post colleague Thomas B. Edsall, Fazio described the union pressure as "regrettable. I have a lot of friends in labor, and this is an area where we have to engage in some discussions about helping preserve the jobs of a lot of people in the airline industry whose parent companies are now in serious jeopardy."

-- Bush Finds Money to Give Every Kid Health Insurance and Head Start, Then Gives It To The Rich. Tell Congress to Say No.

(If you are already a member of TrueMajority, you can send free faxes to your Representatives in Congress by just clicking Reply and then Send. Please forward this message to your friends, family and colleagues! If this message was forwarded to you or if you'd like to edit your letter, click this link to send your fax:)

Send Fax here!

In his State of The Union Message President Bush made a passionate case for making stock dividends tax-free. Most of us who own stocks already have them in tax-free retirement accounts, so this benefit only really benefits the super-rich - to the tune of $27,000 a year for the average millionaire. Meanwhile The Children's Defense Fund calculated that just the money going to this millionaire tax cut could provide health insurance for every American kid who doesn't have it and Head Start for every eligible kid who needs it. And unlike Bush's "millionaires need more caviar" plan, this would actually create jobs right in the communities getting hit the hardest AND prepare our youngest to be successful.

Tell your Senators and Representative that they should worry more about the well-being of America's kids and economy than its millionaires. Click Reply and we'll send a fax to your Representative now asking them to oppose the tax cut on dividends and use the money for Head Start and health care. If you want to customize the fax or if a friend forwarded this email to you, just click this link to send your free fax: Send Fax here!

And please forward this email to anyone else you know who isn't a millionaire.

Sincerely,
Ben

------------

Here is the letter we'll add you name to and fax to your Senators and Representative:

Dear Senator/Representative:

I am a constituent of yours who is worried more about the well-being of America's kids and economy than its millionaires. That is why I am writing to ask you reject President Bush's plan to eliminate the tax on stock dividends and to instead use that money to make sure that every kid in America has health care and those who need it get a spot in the Head Start program. Forgoing the proposed tax cut would free up the money to pay for these needed programs.

Investing in kids instead of millionaires is not only the moral thing to do; it would help our economy far more as well. In the short term it would create thousands of jobs in Head Start centers and health care clinics in our hardest hit communities. In the long term, investing in the education and well-being of our children pays handsomely. Handing the average millionaire a tax cut of $27,000/year would do none of those things.

Thank you for your attention.

Sincerely,
(We'll put your name and address here).
