Basic PINE E-Mail Commands
The following instructions provide an introduction to logging on and using the Titan mainframe computer for processing electronic mail using PINE. If you do not have an account, you will need to go to the Titan Account Authorization via the Web site. Make sure you have your pin number and Student ID.

To SEND Mail: From the Main menu provided, select, C COMPOSE MESSAGE. A new screen will appear with a number of fields for you to enter information into:

To : enter the e-mail address you wish to send mail to On-Campus: Username (EX: z_smithab) Off-Campus: Username@their.addr.ess (EX: nobody@no.where.com)

Cc : This is the Carbon Copy field. If you wish to send a copy of your mail to yourself or someone else, enter the address here. Separate multiple addresses with a comma. (OPTIONAL) Attachment: This is the attachment field where you can enter a file name to be included with the message to be sent.

(OPTIONAL) Subject: This is the subject header field. (OPTIONAL) Now you may enter your message in the space provided. When ready to send. Hold down the CONTROL button and press X.


To READ Mail: From the Main menu, choose L FOLDER LIST.? This will bring up-a new screen listing your mail folders. Use the Arrow keys on your keyboard to select a folder and press <return>. This will bring up a listing of mail messages stored with in the selected folder. To read a message, highlight the message and press <return>. All new mail is stored in the New Mail folder.


To REPLY to a Message: Replying to a small message allows you to respond to someone's mail message without having to type in his or her e-mail address. It will automatically place their address in the "To:" field for you. After reading a particular message, hit the "R" key to reply to that message. This will bring up the Send screen with the appropriate fields (see To SEND mail)


To FORWARD a Message: Forward allows you to send an exact copy of a particular message to someone else without having to type in the message. After reading a particular message hit the "F" key to forward the message and you will be prompted for the address to send the message to.


DELETE Mail: To delete a message, enter the mail folder containing the message and select the message to be deleted by highlighting it with the Arrow keys. Now hit the, D" key. This will select the message to be deleted. Upon exiting PINE you will be asked if you wish to Expunge messages selected to be deleted. By answering yes, Y, the selected messages will be permanently removed otherwise. The messages are left alone.


To PRINT Mail:

First, you need to set-up a Box Number where your printouts will be placed. All printouts from TITAN (including e-mail) go to the main line printer in the Boynton Computing Lab located in room 109 of the Boynton building. The printouts are then placed into a specified box number where you may pick them up.


To Set up a Box Number: At the Main menu, choose the Setup option by typing "S". Now, type "P" for Printer. Type "3" and you will be prompted for a box number. Type "Pine_Print 4:B Smith". You may choose your own box number by substituting any number 1-10 for the 4 and any letter A-l for the B. Where "Smith" appears you may enter your own name or anything of your choosing. The "Pine_Print" must appear exactly as typed.


To PRINT a Message: View the message you wish to print (see To READ Mail above). Press the "Y" key and you will be asked if you wish to print or not. Type "Y" again for "yes" and your message will be printed.

To Setup the Address Book:

From the Main menu, select " ADDRESS BOOK. Now type "A" for Add. You will be prompted for the necessary information: EX: New full name (last, first): enter the person's name

Enter new nickname (one word and easy to remember): enter a nickname for the person

Enter new e-mail address: enter the person's e-mail address At the "To:" field when Sending a message, you may enter the persons nickname and it will automatically replace it with their Full name and the e-mail address you have saved for them.


Quitting PINE:

To exit PINE (which you must do to log off of your account). Push the "Q" key or select the quit option at the Main menu. You will be asked, "Really quit Pine? And answer with "y" to exit.

Other Information:

In PINE, the ^ appearing before a character signifies that you need to hold down the CONTROL button while pressing the specified character to execute a command.

EX: "^X to Send" means that by pressing CONTROL-X You will send your message

Logging Out of your Account: Logging out your account is very important. Always log out of your account when done. At the $ prompt. Simply type "lo" or "logout" to exit your account.
