I remember seeing/hearing someone on television say: We don’t learn the alphabet, we learn a song. I believe this to be true. My daughter, Abigail, is about to turn 4, and she is singing The Alphabet Song. And that brings me here, writing.
For reference, I looked up The Alphabet Song in two children’s song books. The Alphabet Song is printed in one of these books. While searching the index of the second book, I found myself singing The Alphabet Song to myself. I was hunting for The Alphabet Song - I was looking at Alouette followed by Amazing Grace in the index. The verse part - LMNOP - tells me that The Alphabet Song is not listed in that index!
But the point of all this is...
I always sing the LMNOP part LEGATO! I’ve heard someone else sing it LEGATO. I’m not going to name any names.
The LMNOP part has eighth-notes. LMNO are eighth-notes; P is a half-note. LMNO are the only eighth-notes in The Alphabet Song. That’s probably why I’ve always sung LMNOP legato. In retrospect, this has been a bad habit.
Starting now, I’m going to sing LMNOP staccato! I think I’ll teach my daughter this staccato eighth-note stuff too.
