NEAR Spacecraft Set for Valentine Landing on Eros
January 31, 2001

The Near Spacecrast is just in time for a Valentine's Day landing on Eros. This will be the spacecraft's final resting place. The robotic craft which left Earth five years asgo and spent the last year orbiting the asteroid is scheduled for a controlled descent two days before Valentine's Day.

They hope it will land gently at the edge of a saddle-shaped feature called Himeros. The calculate its' descent speed at about seven miles per hour. Even at this speed, the craft could be wrecked but it won't matter since it accomplished the mission it set out to do. NEAR (Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous ) spacecraft was the first craft to ever orbit and asteroid. It tool about 160.000 images of Eros. The final images sent to Earth when NEAR sort of crash lands will have a detailed resolution of about two inches. Also, scientists believe that if NEAR survives the landing, its' beacon would still send signals to Earth for months to come.

Father jailed for keeping daughter in kennel , Feb 2, 2001

A father has been jailed for 30 days after he forced his seven-year-old daughter to sleep in a kennel outside his Virginian home.

Christian Williams, 33, was also ordered to pay a £350 fine and take a parenting class after he pleaded guilty to abuse and neglect charges at a Chesapeake court.

When police found the girl in the plywood kennel, she had not bathed or been fed in two days. She was covered in mosquito bites and soaked from rain that leaked through the roof.

Williams told a judge he kept the child outside for least two nights because less severe punishments had not deterred her bad behaviour.

Williams and the girl's stepmother, Jennifer Williams, were arrested on August 13 after a neighbour told police she heard the girl scream, "Please, Daddy, let me in."

The stepmother pleaded guilty to the same charges and is to be sentenced later.

Williams obtained custody of the girl and her 10-year-old sister after authorities allegedly found them living in a rubbish-strewn, rodent-infested home with their mother in California. The girls now live with their maternal grandmother in California

The image was recorded on 30th. January. The Sombrero galaxy has an unusually large and extended central bulge of stars, as well as dark prominent dust lanes that can be see silhouetted against the starsAt the heart of the galaxy is an intense source of radiation at almost all wavelengths. This is believed to be a super-massive black hole. The Sombrero galaxy is located in the constellation Virgo, at a distance of about 50 million light-years. Silence
