This fabulous Titanic Era day dress c1911-1913. This silk on this dress is in superb, strong condition. The dress closes in the front with a panel and side eye hooks. The top is trimmed with a rich purple silk wide collar. Click HERE to see the top view of the dress. The symbols printed on the dress are "fleur de Lys" the national flower of France and the symbol on the flag of the province of Quebec. The cuffs of the dress are trimmed in the same rich purple. The highlight of the gown are the long rounded tails, three, each solid rich purple trimmed with the printed silk. Click HERE to see a view of the tails on the skirt. The only flaw of the dress is the fading of the silk, this is seen on various parts of the dress including the underarms. The price reflects this problem as a dress in the condition would go for hundreds of dollars. This dress is still extremely striking and in fabulous condition as far as construction and strength. Click HERE to see the side view. The top of the dress has a batiste bodice trimmed with a bit of lace around the top and closed with eye hooks. Measures 34" bust, 26" waist, shoulder seam to seam 16", shoulder to hem 50". The bodice fits slightly smaller in the waist of 24" but can be moved to accomodate 26".

During the Victorian Era the first 12 months after the death of a husband were "Deep Mourning". This meant dresses and bonnets with no trim and plain black crepe. After the 12 months were up, other fabrics could be worn, still in black , but no jewelry or accessories. Only after 18 months could a widow enter "Half Mourning", this meant still black dresses and bonnets only now trimmed in lace and white collars and cuffs and more ornate bonnets. This bonnet is a fine example of a Half Mourning accessory. The bonnet is true black velvet, gathered to form a sort of ruching. The trimmings are fabulous feathers and silk ribbons of white and black. There is also what appears to be finely braided horsehair running around the outer edges of the bonnet. The condition is excellent. There is very minor splitting of the silk ribbons, the ties have the worst damage..although not terrible. They could easily be replace or even uses as it is now. The lining is cotton buckram in excellent condition. Click HERE to see a side view of the bonnet and Click HERE to see the other side. Click HERE to see a picture of the top of the bonnet. It was not until a full mourning period of 30 months were up before the woman of the era could wear any other clothing. On a side note, upon the death of a wife, men of the era had only a 3 month mourning period!

Here is another wonderful Half-Mourning Bonnet, this one trimmed in lace and lots of jet beading! The base material is black crepe. There is an attached back veil in netting material. This bonnet is very ornate with crinkle crepe elaborately piled high. There are only a couple of problems with this majestic bonnet, the veiling has many small holes. The holes do not show unless the material is pulls open due to way that is falls together. I have also seen one small split in the crepe on the top inner portion, but again this does not show due to the crinkle cut of the crepe. Very very faint fabric discoloration in places the typical "Widow's Weed" crepe fading. None of these things take away from the bonnet, but did need to be mentioned. A lovely example of the Victorian Era. Click HERE to see a side view of the bonnet and Click HERE to see the other side. Click HERE to see a picture of the top of the bonnet.
