Wilderness First Aid - WFA 1-460

This is a practical based course designed for individuals who will be participating in outdoor activities reasonably close to medical assistance. The course will provide participants with an introduction to wilderness first aid. Basic topics are covered with an emphasis on practical skills, decision making and dealing with environmental conditions. Content includes; patient assessment, shock, wound management, burns, fractures and sprains, environmental injuries, common medical problems, first aid kits. The Wilderness First Aid course may be modified to accommodate CPR training and other elements of wilderness first aid, outdoor safety or leadership training.

This course has become a minimum standard for outdoor professionals, guides and instructors who work in a wilderness setting. Course content extends far beyond urban-based first aid programs to include elements inherent in leading groups in the outdoors and guiding wilderness adventures. Special emphasis is placed on accident scene management, group leadership, leadership responsibility and liability, prevention of injuries, advanced first aid kits, wound management and managing the trauma victim.

An advanced program for outdoor professionals who work in remote settings, rescue personnel, and those requiring a solid foundation in wilderness pre-hospital emergency care. In addition to material covered in the 40 hour program, special emphasis is placed on traumautic injuries, incident command, long-term patient care, leader responsibility and liability, advanced medical kits, wound cleaning, evacuation procedures and working with Emergency Medical Services.
