Cross-sections of a mammoth tusk (ABOVE) and walrus tusk(BELOW) reveal differences in internal structure. Mammoth tusks have cross-hatchings called Shreger lines. Walrus tusks have an internal core that is marbled, or looks like oatmeal, and is surrounded by rings.

PRODUCTS

Our products are made from naturally shed antlers, fossil walrus and mastodon ivory and ram horn.

The caribou and moose shed their antlers every year in the late fall and are recovered by antler hunters from the ground. Some antlers will have markings on them from smaller wildlife that has been forging on them while laying on the tundra,

Ram horns are not shed and come from dall sheep that have been hunted. We do not hunt them ourselves but purchase the horns from dealers. They are rare and hard to come by for this reason.

The mastodon is from the tusk of the great mammoth. Any of our pieces can be aged at 40,000 years or more. The mammoth is abundant in the Alaska interior but is quiet expensive to purchase.

Fossil walrus ivory, and some whale parts such as bone or baleen is used to make our products.
