guidelines for submitting applications for work permits

It is advisable to submit applications for work permits at least six (6) to eight (8) weeks prior to the date on which the proposed employee is required to assume duties, as processing of an application is normally concluded within this period. Application forms are available at the Ministry of National Security, Knox Street, Port of Spain.
It should be noted that according to the laws of the republic of Trinidad and Tobago, Chap 18:01, section 10 subsection 1, persons should not be employed without a valid work permit.


The following documents must be submitted when applying for a work permit:
a) A covering letter from the prospective employer. (This must set out the reasons why a national cannot be hired)
b) Twelve application forms completed and signed by both the proposed employee and the prospective employer at sections 23 and 33 respectively.
c) Two character references, including one from a previous employer.
d) A Police Certificate of Character from the person's country of origin or place of domicile during the period of five years previous to the date of application.
e) Proof of qualifications. (Reference is made to item (ii) at the bottom of page 3 of the application forms.)
f) Three (3) photographs of the prospective employee.
g) Proof of Advertisment of the position
h) The official receipt for the application fee of TT $600 from the Ministry of National Security, Knox Street, Port of Spain.
