SHELTER ISLAND, Long Island, New York - A cruising guide
t/t The Voyage of Snow Goose - sailing website
Strategically placed between the North and South Forks of Long Island, Shelter Island is a unique jewel that stands alone. Accessed only by ferry, the island has attained an isolation that has led to its charmingly casual and relaxed atmosphere. Although small in size, its abundant ponds and natural harbors have created miles of waterfront, with some parts of the island having rolling hills and wonderful water views. For the boater, Shelter Island has three harbors that are unique to themselves, each offering a delightful mixture of landscape and architecture. Situated on the north side of the island lies Dering Harbor, with its yacht club, restaurants, and inns, where there is always a collection of bristol yachts set in an elegantly esthetic environment. Coecles Harbor, the island's eastern harbor, borders the Mashomack preserve, which has dedicated as much as 8,000 acres, 1/3 of the entire island as a sanctuary. This can be a great place to view the spectacular wildlife, such as the large nesting osprey. Here a marina is also available for your boating needs. West Neck Harbor, on the southwest side, is a large well-protected anchorage, which has a lovely beach fronting Noyac Bay. This might be a good place to launch the tender and explore its long and meandering creeks, lined with elegant stately homes. West Neck Harbor is a quiet and delightful anchorage, but please note that there is a 48-hour limit to your stay in paradise. Shelter Island is the perfect place to explore by bicycle. Its quite streets and lack of traffic allows one to enjoy the sights of the island at a leisurely pace. Observe some of the local architecture or many of the numerous vistas that abound on the island. Perhaps you can pack a picnic lunch and make it a day that will be hard to forget. Shelter Island has a magical quality that makes you feel like you could be almost anywhere. With its multiple ports and enchanting beauty, time is something you will wish you had much more of when visiting this memorable place. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~o--) Not To Miss on Shelter Island Fun in the Sun Beaches
