PlaneShift Screenshots
I used to play as many games as I could find time for, but over the
last
year or two, I have spent almost no time playing games. Sure, I
might
play half an hour of Quake3 or Unreal Tournament 2003 at the end of a
difficult
week, but for the most part, Peter Pan grew up.
While searching for games for Linux systems I sell (or service), I
found
what looked like a very promising (and very young) *GPL **game called PlaneShift. I originally
downloaded,
compiled, and created a character to see what kind of game it was.
(To
the best of my recollection, that was around the second to last week of
June.)
PlaneShift is (or at least is going to be) an Everquest type of game,
and
I don't really care for those types of games, at least not as much as
most
of the people who play them. I do, however, love to test software
and
look for bugs. I also like creating software, and I hoped that I
could
become part of the PlaneShift development team. So, I logged in,
looked
around for a while, watched a little bit of text in the chat window,
and
introduced myself.
Silly me, I didn't expect to actually have fun! I still don't
play
the game, except for collecting the occasional crystal, but I hang out
with
everyone else in a chatroom setting that can only be compared to
Anthrocon.
(In case you're wondering, I've never been to an Anthrocon, and
aside
from Mynarski Forest, I'm not as obsessed as some of the furry
creatures
I hang around with.)
The people I've met in PlaneShift are truly in a league all their own.
I've
never before seen such a collection of considerate, caring,
compassionate,
selfless, warm, friendly, funny, open, respectable, relatable people.
(By the way, in Planeshift, my character's name is Klugerrrr. My
first
three characters, Kluger, Klugerr, and Klugerrr, seem to be broken.
On
the forums, I'm Kluger. See you there!)

* - PlaneShift is partly GPL, partly
copyright.
Please read the PlaneShift license agreement if you wish to use
portions
of the software package.
** - As many people will say, it's not a game...yet. It's a
technical
demonstration of what PlaneShift is likely to become. It's
pre-alpha.
In other words, it has known bugs and would normally not be
released
to the public, but the public was dying of curiosity, so we were given
this
pre-alpha tech demo. It's basically a really fancy chatroom with
minor
gameplay built in. (Now that doesn't mean you can't play games in
PlaneShift, like tag, hide and seek, and various chatroom games.)
