MOUNT UNION REPEATS AS NCAA DIVISION III CHAMPIONS

Mills named head coach for USA III/Martin Luther King Holiday All Star Classic

Chuck Mills, who guided the United States Coast Guard Academy to a 9-2 record and a berth in the NCAA Division III playoffs, has been named the Head Coach of the Red Squad for the USA III/Martin Luther King Holiday All Star Classic which will be played in Fayetteville, NC on Monday, January 19, 1998.
Mills returned to the sidelines for the first time this season since 1988 when he was the head coach at Southern Oregon. This was his seventh head coaching job, placing him one behind leader John Heisman, who held eight head coaching jobs.
Sporting a career record of 140-133-5, Mills has been the Director of Athletics at Coast Guard for the last nine years and has administrative experience as an Assistant Dean of Men and Executive Director of the Blue-Gray game in Montgomery, Alabama.
Mills, has won three coaching honors this season after leading the Bears to a regular season record nine wins (9-2), a second straight Freedom Football Conference Championship, with a perfect 6-0 record and a return trip to the NCAA Playoffs. Mills was named Freedom Football Conference Coach of the Year, American Football Coaches Association GTE Regional Coach of the Year and the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston's Division II/III Coach of the Year.
Considered the Father of modern Japanese College Football, the Japanese version of the Heisman Trophy is called the Mills Cup.

WOOSTER 21 - WITTENBERG 19

In the most exciting and meaningful football game played at The College of Wooster in more than two decades, the Scots stunned the more than 3,000 fans in attendance at John P. Papp Stadium with a 21-19 victory over Wittenberg.
The game, which was played in rainy and muddy conditions, swung on many plays, but ultimately was decided with just 2:46 left in the fourth quarter.
With Wooster clinging to a 21-19 lead, Wittenberg started its final offensive possession at their own six-yard line. After three completions, the Tigers stayed alive when the Scots were flagged for a pass interference call at the 21-yard line on fourth down. Two plays later, Wittenberg quarterback Shaun Brown hit Jason Love on a 47-yard pass to the Wooster 32-yard line with 1:50 to play. Again, the Scot defense stood tough, forcing three more incompletions from Brown. After each team called timeout, Brown threw a pass up for wide receiver Rodney Hopkins, who nearly caught it before it was knocked away by Wooster defender Shawn Marks. With the Tigers out of timeouts, the Scots kneeled down on the final three plays for the victory.
To put this win in perspective, Wooster had not beaten Wittenberg since 1949, and has not won or shared a conference title since 1959. If the Scots can beat Ohio Wesleyan next week and both Wittenberg and Allegheny win, the three teams will share the conference crown.
Statistically, Wittenberg outgained Wooster 283-185, but were hurt by three interceptions and one fumble. Both teams currently stand 8-1 overall and 6-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.
