STOCKS

One of the Cripple Creek Mining District's rarest of the rare! A "Independence Town and Mining Company" stock certificate, engraved printing done by "The Pueblo Litho & Print. Co, Pueblo Colo", about 10 1/2" x 7". Two vignettes, the top one showing the Hull City mine buildings at the Independence townsite, Goldfield, Colorado, and the bottom (which is a litho) showing a young boy in his finest attire (the son of a company official?). Shares have a par value of $1.00 each. Number 5847, issued to RAYMOND MILLER for ONE(?)THOUSAND shares, bearing the embossed company seal, and the signatures of W.S. Montgomery, President, and J.E. Gregg, Secretary. Date is illegible. The Assignment section on the back, which has not been executed, shows the place to date as 190_, so it has to be pre-1910. The back shows glue around it's border, and is soiled. This mining company was incorporated October 30, 1894 to develop the Hull City placer, and the Reindeer lode. In EXCELLENT condition showing minor wear/tear - it has been folded. $500.00

BONDS

Series of 1907 (#4) $500.00 Water Bond - "Principle and Interest payable at the Banking House of Kountze Brothers, New York City". Punched out in several places as "PAID" - bears the embossed seal of the City of Goldfield and signatures of the Mayor (A.I. Hayes?), City Clerk (Mary Weaver - almost illegible) and City Treasurer (W.A. Harrison - almost illegible). About 9 1/2" x 14 3/4". Colors of brown, black and red - no coupons attached. In EXCELLENT condition with three folds and some minor writing in ink on the front. $175.00

Warrants

Towns in the "Old West" paid their debts with "warrants", I.O.U.s that could bear interest. If you received a warrant in payment for something, and went to the Town Hall to cash it, there may not have been funds on hand to pay you. At that point it was "registered" on the back (and in the Warrant Register Book) and began to draw whatever interest was shown, usually 6%. Except for the 1899 warrant, all warrants are about 8 1/2" x 3 3/5", and similar to the first and second pix shown above (front & back) in reduced size. Each was issued to someone, paid, cancelled and returned to the city files. The 1899 warrant (third pic above) is slightly larger, a different design, and shows "Town of Goldfield", not City of Goldfield. Each is in EXCELLENT condition, bears the embossed city seal, and the actual signatures of the Mayor and City Clerk. They are beautiful examples of lithography from that time.
