Teak, also known as tectona grandis has remarkable qualities. It is also known for their durability and their natural colour are beyond words. It is use for furniture making and makes a good interior for yacht and luxurious ship, because of their ability to withstand moisture. It's characteristics also prevent the timber from being attack by termites and it is known to last from generation to generations.
Due to the increase in the demand of timber, the world resources for the demand of logs have been increased tremendously but unfortunately, with current problems such as the depletion of the ozone layer, the best alternative to source for logs is to invest in forest replantation. This is commonly done in countries like the US, Australia and also New Zealand, just to name a few, however, this has often been overlook in Asia Countries.
In 1994, the Malaysian Government realise that in the next millenium, the timber industry will encounter shortage in logs and our government have launched a campaign on forest replantation. Among the fast growing species identified, tectona grandis was one of them, together with other species like Hevea and Sentang. The problem that occur was that there is a difficulty in sourcing for the supply of seeds, thus the campaign was not that successful. Our parent Company has been in the timber business for over 40 years but due to the difficulty in sourcing for logs, we have downsized our Sawmill. Hence, we realise that there is a great potential in forest replantation. Many Sawmills in Malaysia were force to close down due to the difficulty in obtaining logs. Among the three species that were identified, we realise that all the three species grew quite rapidly but in terms of profitability, we would recommend the teak species. It can easily fetch about US3,000-00 per cubic metres depending on the maturity of the trees.
