My Old Demo Reel - 09:53
(CLICK HERE to download a high resolution version of this video.)
This is the editing/cinematography demo reel I compiled in the summer of 1999. Aside from changing the contact information at the end of the video (which is once again outdated) in 2002, the reel is exactly as I made it when I was nineteen years old.
The video footage was shot on S-VHS and Hi8 (that makes me feel old). The film footage was shot on Super-8 and 16mm. It was edited on a custom-built PC with a 200 MHz processor and 120MB of RAM (it had a 133 MHz processor and 60MB of RAM when many of the clips were edited) and two 2GB ultra-wide AV SCSI hard drives (that cost about $2,000 each and typically lasted about eighteen months).
Highlight Reel for ReelSports Solutions - 08:00

In the summer of 2002, I edited this demo reel for ReelSports Solutions. At the time, ReelSports Solutions, whom I worked for on The Rookie, was one of the nation's leading providers of sports coordination and sports training for motion picture and television production. I created this reel of the group's highlights by cutting together footage from movies, news broadcasts, and DVD extras.
My Short Film Fiasco - 02:31
(CLICK HERE to download a high resolution version of this video.)
In March of 2002, at the height of my "starving artist" phase of life, one of my friends and I scraped together a few hundred dollars to try shoot a five-minute short film for my directing reel and his acting reel. The film was a fiasco. On the first day of shooting we found that one of our locations, a spring-fed pool where we planned on shooting some underwater shots, had dried up in the three weeks since we'd scouted it. Then one of the actors had trouble with his dialogue, leading to half of our meager supply of film being wasted on one scene. After our first weekend of shooting I realized that the acting was terrible and that the Super-8 film on which we'd decided to shoot gave the footage less of a B-movie look (as I'd hoped) and more of a home movie look, so we decided to scrap the project rather than waste any more money on it.
This is two and a half minutes of the footage we shot (sans dialogue). This should not be viewed as indicative of my editing skills (or any of my other skills). We couldn't afford to shoot much coverage, and we never finished the film, so I just pieced together what we had and slapped some music over it. The footage is mediocre, and it doesn't cut together very well, but it's still kind of amusing to watch.
Concealed Handgun Licensing Class (stock news footage) - 02:06
(CLICK HERE to download a high resolution version of this video.)
On March 29, 2008, I shot some stock news footage of the college-based organization Students for Concealed Carry on Campus hosting a concealed handgun licensing class at Texas State University. This is about two minutes of the thirty-minute reel I compiled, with the addition of some appropriate background music.
This is pretty dry stuff. I wish I could have gotten more creative with the firing line footage, but because of safety concerns, because I wasn't allowed to interfere with the students, and because I was also tasked with taking still photos of the students, I was basically limited to setting the camera on a tripod and leaving it relatively untouched while the students were firing. Most of the footage was shot on a 3-chip Canon MiniDV camera. The downrange footage (in front of the shooters) was shot with a Sony MiniDV Handicam.
