The types of Utiaritchthys sennaebragai have a lengthened body, and the two series of teeth of the prémaxillaire are close but noncoupled. The specimens brought back to Utiaritichthys sennaebragai subsequently to its description differ from the types in particular by the height of the body, the shape and the relative position of the teeth of the two series of the prémaxillaire like by the number of scales on the body. These specimens are brought closer the taxon described by Machado-Allison (1982) and brought back by error to Utiaritichthys.
Locality type: Bassin du river Wood, river Aripuanã, 3 km en amont of la kick of Dardanellos, (60o 40 ' W, 9o10 ' S) TM. 8/IX/1976. Coll. Ictiologia team of the INPA.
Géry (1972) placed a single species sennabragai (Gosline, 1951) from the Tapajos, Tocantins and Araguaia rivers into this genus. According to Géry they look like a Myleus that lost part of the abdominal serration. The species and its other features (post ventral region, serrae and teeth) lend itself to appear like the real pacus. In Géry's opinion, Utiaritichthys could enter into Myleus as a subgenus. Géry further added "in coloration U. sennaebragi has much in common with Myleus torguatus, both having a conspicuous black border to the anal and caudal fins."
According to Jégu et al., (1992), the specimens placed in Utiaritichthys do not belong to that genus. The taxon N. gen. A includes specimens that could not be placed in Utiaritichthys or any other serrasalmin genus Jégu et al, (1992), and its proper definition is contingent on a complete revision of the genus Myleus (Jégu, unpublished data). The only difference between Utiaritichthys and Myleus is the elongation of the body of the former, and Jégu et al., (1992) suggested a sister-group relationship of these two genera.
