Jim Barna Log Homes of the Southeast

Hello, and thank you for visiting! We look forward to working with you and helping your log home dream become reality.

Already, you have distinguished yourself as a unique person, one whom usually marches to the beat of a different drummer - a log home owner.

From the days of Native American lodges, and settler log shacks, log structures have played an integral part of American history. They are the foundation of residential and community structures in North America, and the world over.

Some people, fewer today than ten years ago, still have serious misconceptions about log homes. If you are ahead of the rest in knowledge of logs and their unique characteristics, please be patient with us and those who aren't.

Some of the more common concerns expressed by those unfamiliar with log homes are their 1) "weather-tightness", 2) fire resistance, 3) ability to obtain financing, 4) insurability, and, 5) resale value.

Jim Barna, Owner, President and CEO of Jim Barna Log home Systems, came upon a unique application of existing 'technology' of wood system joinery and applied it to the construction of log homes. This system, or method, called tongue-in-groove, involves cutting fittings for a 'male' portion and a 'female' portion into each log, and fitting them into each other thereby increasing the structural, and weather-tight integrity over nail or glue-only joinery. JBLS uses only double tongue-in-groove joinery on all their logs. The tongue-in-groove method has been historically, and, is currently used in the finest construction today.

Regarding fire resistance, the National Bureau of Standards, a U.S. federal agency, conducted several series of tests early in the beginnings of the log home industry to determine the safety of log construction in an actual fire. The tests were conclusively overwhelming in favor of log construction. Tests conducted were those to determine burn ratings and other factors such as smoke and flash fire associated with conventional 'stick' construction.
