Experimenting with Bronze Finishes

To Get This Finish: Follow This Procedure:
The first three of these finishes are the steps I used to to "bronze" the "Weather the Storm" figurine.
  1. Apply a thick layer of black to the baked clay.
  2. Allow to thoroughly dry.
  3. Apply two or three layers of Chemtek (Chemtek, www.chemtek.com, 1-888-871-8100)Dark Bronze Metallic
  4. Mix 2/1, Chemtek Aqua Blue patina to Chemtek Green patina.
  5. Brush the patina mixture over the layer of Dark Bronze Metallic. Note:You can apply patina to Chemtek Dark Bronze Metallic while it is still wet or after it dries. I applied it wet.
  6. When the desired patina is achieved, brush with Chemtek Aqueous Sealant to stop the patina process and seal the finish.
  1. Follow the directions for the previous finish.
  2. Mix a small quantity of Pearl-ex Super Bronze powder with Chemtek Aqueous Sealer to form a very thin paste.
  3. With your finger, lightly apply the paste to the high points on the baked clay. When you blend Pearl-ex powders with a sealant, you don't need to further seal your clay piece. Unless you want to, of course!
  1. Follow the directions for the two previous finishes.
  2. Apply a thick layer of black acrylic paint. As it dries, rub it in to the cracks and crevices of your piece.
  3. Buff away the remaining black paint until the bronze and some of the red shows through. There will be black left in the nooks and crannies.
The rest of these finishes I got with just playing around to see which finish I preferred.
  1. Apply two thick layers of red oxide acrylic paint, drying in between. Allow to dry.
  2. Apply a thinner layer of iridescent bronze acrylic paint. Allow to dry.
  1. Prepare as in the previous finish.
  2. Apply a thick layer of black acrylic paint. As it dries, rub it in to the cracks and crevices of your piece.
  3. Buff away the remaining black paint until the bronze and some of the red shows through. There will be black left in the nooks and crannies.
  1. Mix a little black acrylic paint into the acrylic red oxide to make a dark red oxide of your liking.
  2. Apply two coats of the dark mix, drying in between. Allow to dry thoroughly.
  3. Use your finger to lightly dust Pearl-Ex Antique Bronze powder on the high spots of clay.
  4. Apply a dusting of Pearl-Ex Aztec Gold in the same way.
  5. Seal with Fimo gloss.
  1. Apply two thick layers of black acrylic paint, drying in between. Allow to dry thoroughly.
  2. Apply a layer of Chemtek Brass Metallic. Allow to dry.
  3. Apply Chemtek Aqua Patina.
  4. When the desired patina is achieved, brush with Chemtek Aqueous Sealant to stop the patina process and seal the finish.
