While we in North America fret over the dawn of the Years 2000, 2001, 2999 and next, and get all worked up into a frenzy at these mythical dates and landmarks, many civilizations have long been well into their 6th millennium. Ever heard of Kampuchia and Angkor Wat? Egypt and the Pyramids? Imperial China? The Incas, the Mayas and the Aztecs? The ancient city of Petra - now in modern Jordan - was literally dug out of desert mountains more than two millennia ago, and Buddha was born in what is now modern Nepal more than two thousand and six hundred years ago. To add to our sense of relativity and proportion, Ethiopia - ruled till the nineties seventies by an imperial dynasty descended from the Queen of Shebah and Solomon - has kept the Julian calendar used by the cradles of early christianity, and for the Ethiopians, whose New Year falls in September, January 2000 will be January 1992. Think again. And email us to add those you know.
