Here is a link to Ken's Unofficial Battlemist Page. It's full of cool variants and optional rules. While we don't agree with his assessment of the races, the rest of his stuff is all top-notch.
UPDATE: It is very important to us that those who play our games are pleased and satisfied with our products. It has been brought to our attention that some players of 5- or 6-player games may experience a shortage of Resource counters. We have therefore decided to make two extra counter sheets avaible to owners of Battlemist for free. You can call 612-647-9633, or send your name and address to Fantasy Flight Games, 1611 Pleasant St., Ste. 310, Lauderdale, MN 55108 and request your free counter sheets. All we ask is $3 to cover shipping.
Battlemist FAQ
Below we answer some of the most common questions about Battlemist:
Q: Is Battlemist a fantasy version of Twilight Imperium?
A: No. While both games feature HexPlay boards and various races with unique strengths and weaknesses, these are the only similarities. Battlemist is a faster, more action-packed game than TI. The Battlemist racial abilities facilitate immediate conflict, and are polarized to bring about drastic game results. Players can be quickly eliminated, a superior empire can be scuttled, and a weak race can rapidly become a powerful force.
Q: What happens if all my opponent’s units are routed in battle?
A: You continue battle as usual (but your opponent's units do not fight). Now both your "Rout" and "Kill" results kill your opponent’s routed units. After the battle round, some of your opponent’s surviving units may return to play after the Rout Check.
Q: How do army units and Heroes interact?
A: They don’t! Heroes do not have to stop their movement when encountering enemy army units, may end their movement turn in a Realm containing enemy units, and army units cannot fight or interact in any other way with the Hero.
Q: What do I do if I run out of Resource counters?
A: Fantasy Flight sincerely apologizes for the lack of Resource counters which becomes especially evident in a five- or six-player game. For ease of play, we recommend recording your stockpiles on paper. We have designed an excellent reference chart and record sheet for this purpose. We are also putting together a color sheet of resource counters. Both these items will be available for free download from this site.
Q: During the "Recruitment” segment, in what order do players recruit new units or build towns and cities?
A: For many players, this is not an issue, since all players act simultaneously without a great deal of regard to what or where their opponents are recruiting. On the other hand, if players wish to take their opponents’ recruiting into consideration, recruiting order become important. In this case, the player with the most stars goes first. If two or more players have the same number of stars, the one who had the initiative during the last turn goes first, and play continues in initiative order.
Q: During combat, if you're rolling attacks for two archers (as an example) during the archery phase, are the two rolls considered to be simultaneous, or does one occur before the other? Note that I'm NOT asking whether or not the 2 different opponents involved in the battle roll simultaneously during the archery phase; I'm asking whether or not both of MY archers roll simultaneously. It makes a difference if one of them rolls a rout and the other one rolls a kill. Because of the way that my opponent has to take the casualties (archers last), it can effect whether or not he's left with an archer routed and a footman dead, or a footman routed and an archer dead.
A: Both rolls are simultaneous. Your opponent may choose which units are routed/killed.
Q: Are alignments used during the game beyond initial setup?
A: No. Right now, alignments are only used while laying out the board, but we plan to use them more extensively in future game variants and expansions.
Q: According to the rules, only Dwarves can build cities in mountains and only Elves can build cities in forests. Can other races build TOWNS in these realms?
A. Yes. Anyone can build a town in any realm. Anyone can build a city in a desert or plain realm.
