In the beginning
before I ever became interested in making dolls, I made life-sized figures for a New Age group that celebrated the seasons. These LSF's had to be of all natural materials so they would eventually return to Nature. They actually lasted one year! These LSF's were made with an armature of one inch vine and bamboo. The skirts were made from many layers of different leaves, and the torsos and hair were made from raffia. I have once again begun to make these figures, but smaller (14" - 3 Ft), and these are made to last as long as other art dolls. These smaller versions are for sale.
Maiden Mother Crone
After making these for over a period of a year, I thought it'd be nice to have smaller figures that would not deteriorate. This, a new marriage, and a pregnancy, put me on the road to dollmaking. The following dolls are in order in which they were first made. Having no idea how to make doll clothes, my first dolls were "draped". However, first and throughout my doll making, I made wooden rolling horses and rocking horses.
Children's Wooden Rolling Horses - These horses, made entirely of solid wood, are very popular with children of many ages. Weight capacity: 180lbs - two feet tall by two feet long.
Angel-My First Doll. Angel was made from Super Sculpey. Her "clothes" was made from fabric immersed in glue and left to dry. Her wings were cut from plastic and feathered in gold ink.
Lady with Feather - Lady was made from Super Sculpey and reinforced with fiberglass. Her clothing was draped.
Grandmother - This was my first portrait doll done of my deceased grandmother. She is 27 inches tall, made of Super Sculpey head and hands, with Papier Mache feet.
Old Man and Friends - Old Man was a portrait doll of a friend. Elf sits on his shoulder and Frogman sits nearby. Old Man was made from Super Sculpey, Elf from Paperclay, and Frogman from Super Sculpey. Old Man was 3 Ft. tall.
The Secretary (A La Robert McKinley)- By this time I had gotten a hold of Robert McKinley's book and decided to make a Secretary using his methods.
Devotion - Bumble Bee has been in s scruffle. His wings are bruised, one of his feet and one of his elbows is bandaged, and he's feeling low, but he is determined to do his job. He's 4 1/2 inches tall and made of resin.
Dental Cowboy - Here is a pioneering spirit who has come upon a giant's tooth in the sand. As dentistry is his profession, he is bound and determined to extract that stubborn tooth. Cowboy is 6 inches tall and made of resin.
The Traveler - Here stands the traveler, at crossroads with many miles to go before she can sleep. Traveler is 14 inches tall and made of Super Sculpey.
French Teacher - A teacher's job is never done. French teacher stands 12 inches tall, and she's made from Super Sculpey.
