1. Location, location, location. If you provide a quality product and present it well, you want a location that is close to the most active booths, or near an entrance if it also doubles as an exit. The marketing tip is: be where the prospects go. This is especially true if you are trying to become known.

2. What about price competition, you ask? If a person is really interested in getting the lowest price they already shop all over as a way of life. What you want to attract are persons who you can interest as an impulse. Customers to whom you can provide repeat value. Marketing tip is: there's more benefits than just price.

3. Get names for follow-up. Use a guest book, sign my mailing list or offer a prize drawing with entry forms that require name, address and telephone. These become your future contact list. Marketing tip: repeat contact can make a sale. A new arrival product can match what someone asked about at the fair.

4. Try a coupon for a future purchase instead of a flyer. Example, give 10% off a purchase of over $XX.XX. If you use an expiration date, make it a long one. Marketing tip: if you don't remember them, make them remember you. A coupon lets a future customer think he or she is getting something of value and will tend to keep the coupon with your name, address and telephone # on it.

6. Do something to attract kids. Adults tag along after kids. Use inexpensive things like balloons, a mechanical toy that moves, even blank sheets of paper with a pencil tied to a string works. Attracting and occupying the child gives you a presentation opportunity with the adult.

7. Have your most expensive, attractive, or best product or item in the most observed area, without price tags visible. Marketing tip: before you can close the sale you need to attract interest. You can answer a question on price, if asked, but you want the best shown to stop the passerby. If there is interest, you can explain any range of prices or products available. Start the answer with "Isn't this just lovely, fits most decor(s), what room are you going to put it in?"

8. Most important, sell benefits. See, comment in marketing tip #7. If you use a poster or standup card, tell prospects how their life will be easier or better. If you don't want to hand out catalogs, at least have one available to show alternative gift ideas. A colorful new arrival brochure can be an inexpensive way to have the prospect take your name, telephone number and address home.

9. Guarantee something. Even if its something you already do for free and hadn't thought you could market it as a "Guarantee of fast service", "Guarantee of Personal Attention", or "Guarantee of Friendly Service".

10. Provide somewhere for a customer to write out the information you want. See #4 above. A chair is nice, or we've seen a raised lecturn used where the person can write standing up (like a wedding guest book stand) work really well.
