AIDA Formula

A tested formula for your ad copy is represented by the AIDA Formula. It stands for A=Attention, I=Interest, D=Desire and A=Act.

We start with the "A" for Act first because that is usually where most ad writers, especially beginners falter. And, it is the most crucial of the formula. You need the reader to act.

Ask People to Do What You Want

You must ask people to buy. You must ask people to send for more information. You must ask people to telephone. And you have to tell them how to do it. Make it simple. Make it clear. The reader should not guess. Or be confused. Always put in a sense of urgency. Say, do it now. Another way is to say the offer is limited. If there is a deadline, say so.

Grab Attention, Interest, and Build Desire

No unread ad ever accomplished its purpose. So, you must grab the attention of the reader. Appeal to self-interest. "Free _____" Free (fill in blank) is popular way because free has so much attention generating power. Another example is "buy one, get one free". Read as many ads as you can and you will see common attention getting techniques.

Once you have the reader's attention, you should build their interest. This is where you promote the benefits you have to offer. Benefits are the things that will make the reader's life easier, more enjoyable, less costly. (If you check out the other free marketing tips on this web site you will find a whole article on features versus benefits. Please do. Do it before you leave. It's easy.)

Once you have attention and interest, you must create a desire. That is a desire for the reader to do what you want. Make a telephone call, get more information, or buy a product. Again build urgency. But also give a guarantee--the stronger the better. Make your offer irresistible.

Remember the basics

The basics of writing ad copy that will assist you is helped by remembering the AIDA formula. Again, its Attention, Interest, Desire and Act.
