"QUADRANT" To "QUAY"

Quadrant, Quadrilateral Sail, Quarantine Flag, Quarter, Quarterdeck,
Quartering, Quartering Sea, Quarters, Quay.

QUADRANT
An instrument, usually containing a graduated arc of 90°, used in
Navigation for measuring Altitude.

QUADRILATERAL SAIL
A four-sided Sail with the Head extending above the Masthead.
(Also, see LUGSAIL)

QUARANTINE FLAG
(Quebec Pennant)
The yellow flag "Q" flown when first entering another country's Harbor,
indicating that all On-Board the Vessel are healthy and requesting
PRATIQUE.

QUARTER
The sides of a Vessel, Abaft Amidships.
[i.e., The distance of Freeboard (Port or Starboard) usually behind
the Main Mast, between Abeam and the Stern of the Vessel.]

QUARTERDECK
The part of a Weather Deck that runs Aft from Amidships or the
Mainmast to the Stern or Poop Deck of a Vessel.
[Usually found on large sailing Vessels such as Square Riggers.]

QUARTERING
Wind blowing on a Vessel's Quarter.

QUARTERING SEA
Waves approaching toward and/or breaking over a Vessel's Quarter.

QUARTERS
Sleeping or living areas on the Vessel.

QUAY
A landing place for boats, usually of solid masonry, constructed
along the edge of the Shore for Docking and unloading.
