"EASE" To "EYE SPLICE"

Ease, Ebb, Ebb Current, Ebb Interval, Ebb Strength, Ebb Tide,
Eddy, Eight Knot, Electrolysis, Electronic Navigation, Elevated Pole,
Embayment, Emergency-Position-Indicating-Radio-Beacon (EPIRB), Ensign,
Equator, Equinoctial, Equinoctial Tide, Equinox, Estimated Position,
Estuary, Eustasy, Eustatic, Exposed-Location-Buoy (ELB),
Eye-Of-The-Wind, Eye-Splice

EASE
To slowly loosen a Line while maintaining control.
[e.g., "Ease the Jib Sheet, as we Fall Off to a Reach."]

EBB
The periodic fall of tide water level during the Tidal Cycle.

EBB CURRENT
The flow of Tide water that moves back to Sea from a Bay, Cove,
or Estuary.

EBB INTERVAL
The interval between the Transit of the Moon over a Local Meridian
and the time of the following Ebb Strength.

EBB STRENGTH
Phase of the Ebb Current at the time of its maximum speed.

EBB TIDE
The period between High Water and Low Water.

EDDY
A circular pattern in a water or air current, which is opposite
to the main current

EIGHT KNOT

ELECTROLYSIS
(See GALVONIC CORROSION)

ELECTRONIC NAVIGATION
Various radio, satellite, and land-based technology, used to
determine the nautical position of a Vessel.

ELEVATED POLE
One of the points on the Celestial Sphere that appears above the Horizon
and nearest to the observer (e.g., the North Point in the Northern
Hemisphere, and the South Point in the Southern Hemisphere).

EMBAYMENT
(See BAY)

EMERGENCY POSITION INDICATING RADIO BEACON
(EPIRB)
An emergency device that uses a radio signal to alert satellites or
passing airplanes to a Vessel's position.

ENSIGN
A flag or banner, such as a naval standard, indicating nationality.

EQUATOR
(Great Circle)
A navigation line around the center of the earth at 0° Latitude.
It is the only Parallel-Of-Latitude on earth that is equidistant
from both North and South poles.

EQUINOCTIAL
Pertaining to the Equinox.

EQUINOCTIAL TIDE
Tide that occurs during the Autumnal and Vernal Equinox.

EQUINOX
When the Sun crosses the Equator. The Vernal Equinox occurs when the
Sun crosses the Equator from south to north, approximately 21 March.
The Autumnal Equinox occurs when the Sun crosses the Equator from
north to south, approximately 23 September.

ESTIMATED POSITION
(Assumed Position)
A navigation method based on Dead Reckoning to determine a Vessel's
Assumed Position by calculating estimated speed, Currents, and the
boat's last observed position.

ESTUARY
(Tidal Estuary)
A Body-Of-Water usually located in Bays where river water and
Ocean Tidal water mix.

EUSTASY
(Eustatic)
A uniform global change of Sea Level.

EUSTATIC
(See EUSTASY)

EXPOSED LOCATION BUOY
(ELB)
Large Buoys that are nine (9) feet in diameter, equipped with
lights and sound signals, as well as weather and electronic navigation
devices. ELBs are powered from solar cells or a generator powered by
Wave action.

EYE-OF-THE-WIND
A sector between Close-Hauled Headings through which the Bow of
the boat must pass in order to keep the sails full during TACKING.

EYE-SPLICE
A permanent loop spliced at the end of a line, by braiding the end
into itself. Sometimes it is reinforced by a metal fitting called a
Thimble.
