Your pond will need to have water moving if you want it to function properly. In order to keep its habitants healthy, water must be well oxygenated and clean. The oxygen it creates is beneficial to your fish and plants. Moving water also cuts down on the accumulation of algae. As a rule water should be turned over every two to five hours depending on the number of plants and fish you have. Moving water also provides a relaxing sound, and a focal point to your pond. With the many types of water movers sold today it doesn't have to be boring. There are many types of water movers to choose from. I will mention a few to help you with your decision. Fountains come in large shapes and sizers. Submersible fountains include sprayers, drizzlers and bubblers. Sprayers shoot water up into the air and also come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Water bell, tiered fountain, and trumpet shaped are a few of the water sprayers that are available. Drizzlers send larger drops of water into the air. Bubblers spray under the water for an attractive bubble pattern. Submersible fountains are commonly made of plastic, stainless steel or brass. Plastic seems to be the most widely used and are most economical. Spitters are nonsubmersible fountains that are usually small statues placed on the side of the pond that appear to be spitting water back into the pond. Streams are also very popular and easy to to build. They can be from 1 foot to 100 feet. The choice is yours. Deer scares are also interesting and done by pumping out water into bamboo pieces. When each bamboo empties it flips back up and makes a clapping noise. Now if you are interested in something a bit more interesting... water falls are the bomb!! They make excellent focal points and are so relaxing. Waterfalls are commonly made out of three materials: real rock, fiberglass or molded plastic. Waterfalls do require more water thean fountains. The average waterfall can cycle up to 450 gallons of water per minute. Choosing the right sizes for whichever water mover you choose can make a big difference in your pond.
