The Cempoala (Sem-pwal-ahh), aka Zempoala, ruins... are about 25 miles north of the city of Veracruz and is opened from 0800 to 1730 daily. You will find the compound surrounded by mango trees an coconut palms. It was the second capital of the Totonaca Empire before it became dominated by the Aztecs. The name is derived from the Nahuatl language and means ´twenty waters´ as it is surrounded by rivers. It is one of the most important archeological sites in the region. There are a few buildings remaining. The Major Temple, The Temple of Chimneys, Gladiator Circle, Temple of the Cross, Temple of the Wind God and the Temple of Faces.
