WORD FOR WORD: "THE SIXTH SENSE"
********************************
"We were supposed to draw a picture, anything we wanted. I
drew a man who got hurt in the neck by another man with a
screwdriver." --Cole Sear (Haley Joel Osment), revealing
indications of his troubled psyche to Malcolm Crowe (Bruce
Willis), in "The Sixth Sense"

"The Aristocats" (1970) (G) Full-Screen
featuring the voices of Phil Harris, Eva Gabor, Sterling
Holloway, and Scatman Crothers; directed by Wolfgang
Reitherman

Disney's 20th animated feature is highlighted by Phil Harris
(the voice of Baloo the Bear in "The Jungle Book")
showcasing his vocal gifts as heroic feline Thomas O'Malley,
who saves the day when a villainous butler schemes to rob a
fortune from a purr-fect heiress and her kitties. It doesn't
quite rank with Disney's best-known classics, but there's
plenty of laughs to be had with this jazzy-cat comedy,
filled with catchy tunes and the usual array of delightful
Disney characters.
"For Love of the Game" (1999) (PG-13) Widescreen
starring Kevin Costner and Kelly Preston; directed by Sam
Raimi
Sale Price Here!
How's this for an odd couple: director Sam ("Evil Dead")
Raimi sheds his roots in lowbrow shock horror by coaching
Kevin Costner in this enjoyable baseball love story.
Costner's role is not much of a stretch (he's playing an
aging sports hero, as he did in "Bull Durham" and "Tin
Cup"), but it fits the actor like an old pitcher's
glove. Raimi feels at home as well (he's proving quite
versatile after "A Simple Plan"), and Kelly Preston
effectively conveys the shifting emotions of a love affair
that runs hot, then cold... then just right. The DVD
includes deleted scenes and a "spotlight on location"
feature.
"Diner" (1982) (R) Widescreen
starring Daniel Stern, Tim Daly, Mickey Rourke, Kevin Bacon,
Steve Guttenberg, and Paul Reiser; directed by Barry
Levinson
Sale Price Here!
One of the best films of its decade, "Diner" has led a
charmed life since its modest release in 1982. New Yorker
film critic Pauline Kael wrote an early rave for Barry
Levinson's directorial debut, and subsequent critical praise
rescued this little gem from threatened obscurity. MGM
barely released it to a handful of theaters, and the
film--about a close- knit group of friends in 1959
Baltimore--has since become a classic of ensemble casting
and casual comedic drama. This great-looking DVD features a
new introduction by Levinson and his cast, who also appear
in a delightful behind-the-scenes documentary. (Only Mickey
Rourke is conspicuously absent.)
"Caddyshack (20th Anniversary Edition)" (1980)
(R) Widescreen
starring Rodney Dangerfield, Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, and
Ted Knight; directed by Harold Ramis
Sale Price Here!
The previous DVD release of "Caddyshack" left much to be
desired, since the transfer quality was not up to the usual
high standards of Warner Home Video. That problem's been
solved for this 20th-anniversary edition, which offers a
clean new transfer and some tantalizing extra features,
including a behind-the-scenes documentary, outtakes, and
interviews with Harold Ramis and his raucous cast of
clowns. The comedy's strictly lowbrow, but let's face it:
with Bill Murray's golf-course warfare against a tenacious
gopher, "Caddyshack" is a certified laugh-athon from the
waning glory days of "Saturday Night Live."

If you didn't see "Boys Don't Cry" during its theatrical
release, now's your chance to see why Hilary Swank won--and
fully deserved--the Oscar for Best Actress. She's truly
phenomenal in the role of Brandon Teena, the girl-as-boy
(actual name: Teena Brandon) whose sexual identity crisis
led to love, trouble, and tragedy in small-town Nebraska.
Directed by Kimberly Peirce with admirable integrity and
emotional depth, this sad, fact-based film is not always
easy to watch, but it's astonishing throughout, thanks to a
terrific script, Swank's breakthrough performance, and a
supporting performance by Chloe Sevigny as Brandon's
at-first-unsuspecting girlfriend. One of the best films of
1999, it arrives on DVD with a commentary by the filmmakers.

The hit family film of 1999 arrives on DVD in grand style,
jam-packed with bonus features including two filmmaker
commentaries, deleted scenes, detailed studies of special
effects, and much more. Based on E.B. White's classic book,
this clever, technically impressive film follows the adopted
mouse, Stuart, as he adjusts to life with a family cat who's
always finding new ways to get Stuart into trouble.
Cowritten by "Sixth Sense" director M. Night Shyamalan,
"Stuart Little" is a wholesome treat filled with movie
magic.
"Blue Velvet" (1987) (R) Widescreen

One of the weirdest, most compelling milestones of modern
American cinema, David Lynch's "Blue Velvet" was briefly
announced for DVD release nearly two years ago, and now it's
finally arrived on the MGM label. From its surreal opening
sequence to its increasingly bizarre explorations of a
suburban underworld, this is a film that divides people into
two opposing camps: those who think it's abhorrently
twisted, sickly comedic, and dementedly perverse... and
those who think it's a masterpiece for all the same
reasons. Either way, it's a film to be reckoned with, with
scenes and images you'll never forget.
"Walking with Dinosaurs" (1999) (NR) Full-Screen

A phenomenal ratings smash when originally broadcast as a
six-part BBC miniseries, "Walking with Dinosaurs" employs
state-of-the-art animatronics and computer-generated images
to take you back to the age of the dinosaurs, with a quality
of realism that will truly amaze you. This isn't "Jurassic
Park," but rather an authoritative study of dinosaur
behavior and habitat, presented in the fashion of a nature
documentary. A marvelous mix of scientific fact and educated
speculation, this is must-see viewing for any dinosaur
enthusiast.

Some of the most memorable movies are the ones that tweak
you with a twist ending--a final jolt that makes you
reevaluate everything you've just seen. "The Sixth Sense" is
the most recent example of this phenomenon, but there are
plenty of other movies with last-minute surprises.
Amazon.com's Mark Englehart offers a closer look at the
movies on DVD that you dare not reveal to the uninitiated
viewer. From "Vertigo" to "Fight Club," take a look at this
tantalizing survey... and don't spoil the fun!

"Never Cry Wolf" (1983) (PG) Widescreen Anamorphic
starring Charles Martin Smith and Brian Dennehy; directed by
Carroll Ballard
Check out Sale DVD Price!
Director Carroll Ballard has contributed three of the very
best family-oriented films of the past 25 years: "The Black
Stallion," "Never Cry Wolf," and "Fly Away Home." Of those
three, "Never Cry Wolf" is the most underrated, and has been
unavailable on video for years. Now, thanks to its agreement
with Disney Home Video, Anchor Bay Video has released a
splendid DVD of this remarkable film, based on Farley
Mowat's fine book about a man who studies wolves by living
among them. An unforgettable film--don't miss it!
"Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" (1939) (NR) Full-Screen
Format
starring James Stewart and Jean Arthur; directed by Frank
Capra
Check out Sale DVD Price!
The latest of Columbia's glorious DVD releases of Frank
Capra classics, this timeless gem stars James Stewart in one
of his most beloved roles as Jefferson Smith, a naive but
intelligent new senator whose idealized view of Washington,
D.C. politics cannot be undermined by corrupt congressmen.
Capra's own idealism and faith in America shine through, and
this briskly paced indictment of cynicism hasn't lost any of
its relevance. Included on the DVD is a retrospective
featurette with Frank Capra Jr., who also provides audio
commentary.
"Double Jeopardy" (1999) (R) Widescreen Format
starring Ashley Judd, Tommy Lee Jones, and Bruce Greenwood;
directed by Bruce Beresford
Check out Sale DVD Price!
A surprise box office hit from last year, "Double Jeopardy"
stars Ashley Judd (currently appearing in "Eye of the
Beholder") as a woman who's been framed for the alleged
murder of her husband (Bruce Greenwood), who has gone on to
pursue a successful life under a new identity. Tommy Lee
Jones is fine as the hardboiled detective who sorts out the
facts, but it's Judd's performance that holds together this
slightly absurd but highly entertaining thriller. She's so
good you'll probably ignore the plot holes, which are
occasionally large enough to drive a truck through.
"Random Hearts" (1999) (R) Full-Screen and Widescreen
Anamorphic
starring Harrison Ford and Kristin Scott Thomas; directed by
Sydney Pollack
Check out Sale DVD Price!
Maligned by critics and a disappointment at the
box-office--can this melancholy love story really be as bad
as all that? It's all a matter of taste, of course, but for
what it's worth, "Random Hearts" is an intelligent,
thoughtful drama about a cop (Harrison Ford) and a
politician (Kristin Scott Thomas) who meet after their
spouses--who had been having an affair--are killed in an
airline accident. Undeserving of its failure, the film will
surely find its audience on DVD.
"How Green Was My Valley" (1940) (NR) Full-Screen Format
starring Walter Pigeon, Maureen O'Hara, and Roddy McDowall;
directed by John Ford
Check out Sale DVD Price!
Did this John Ford classic really deserve to win the Best
Picture Oscar at the expense of "Citizen Kane"? History has
been kinder to the Orson Welles masterpiece, but Ford's
equally excellent film is every bit as worthy of its
accolades. It's perhaps Ford's greatest non-Western--a
moving, emotionally rich drama about the joys and struggles
of a family of Welsh coal miners. It's gloriously filmed in
black and white, and now dazzling on DVD.
"The Bone Collector" (1999) (R) Widescreen Anamorphic
starring Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie; directed by
Phillip Noyce
Check out Sale DVD Price!
This formulaic thriller begs comparison to "The Silence of
the Lambs" and "Seven," and even though it's not quite in
the same league as those acclaimed films, it's still a well-
crafted effort by "Dead Calm" director Phillip Noyce. Denzel
Washington and Angelina Jolie are well-matched as,
respectively, a quadriplegic detective and a rookie cop who
combine their complementary skills to solve a grisly series
of murders. A bit too sordid at times, but guaranteed to
grab and hold your attention.

PRESERVING THE VISION: DIRECTOR'S CUT DVDs
******************************************
As the saying goes, an artist's work is never done, only
abandoned. That's particularly true in the case of many film
directors who constantly find ways to improve their work,
even after it's proven commercially successful. The
flexibility of DVD is particularly suited to indulge a
director's passion for perfection, so it's not surprising
that the phenomenon of the "director's cut" is growing more
common on DVD. There's a wide variety of old and new films
that have benefited from directorial "noodling," and
Amazon.com contributor Sean Axmaker has celebrated this
trend with a survey of the best director's cuts on DVD.
