Topic: Alec WILDER
Alec Wilder was born a hundred years ago this week. Alec Wilder (born Alexander Lafayette Chew Wilder in Rochester, New York, February 16, 1907; d. Gainesville, Florida, December 24, 1980) was an American composer. He wrote thousands of pieces of music and was acclaimed as one of the most inventive and lyrical American composers.
Today, few people can name even one or two of his songs.
But he is eminent in musical history because of his 1972 book American Popular Song, which featured artful celebrations, insights, and sideswipes of the most popular American songs and their composers. And he didn't even mention one of his own works.
