DEPRESSION
I KNOW what you're thinking...

for more years than I'd care to think about,
and know now that:
Depression is a REAL DISEASE
caused by a chemical imbalance in your brain.
NO ONE knows what triggers it, OR how to cure it.
Someone said it comes from what you do...
AND what is done TO you.
It CAN be treated and controlled to an extent.

and these things help, but, none of them tell you how to cure it...."

FIRST, I won't insult you or make myself look stupid
by saying something like...
"I was born at an early age...."
You are not born with Depression...
I can trace my symptoms back earlier than most, however.
Somewhere in my teens is about right.
So you say, "Why didn't you get treatment?
Simple. I did not recognize it.
I knew SOMETHING was not right, but what it was,
I never recognized during those years.
...Some called me a 'borderline Sociopath'.
It was only after suffering for half my lifetime,
and my marriage began to fall apart, that I realized
that some kind of help was needed.
Around 1989, I sat down with several so-called 'counselors'.
The Pastor(gone now), was not much help...
(EXCEPT in one way...
He brought Rick Amato into the picture. more below.)
and neither of the church counselors helped.
The first one, after she admitted her greatest
qualification for doing what she did was...
"Well, I DO have a license."
After many sessions, her conclusion was:
"You've been hurt, haven't you?"
Duuuuuh.
The second one, who had some kind of Doctorate,
seemed shocked and speechless after a few more
sessions, by my statement:
"How about if you give me a reason to care...."
Later on, he went the way of many in the ministry,
and was involved in adultery, as was the Former Pastor.

Then Rick Amato (depression@rickamato.com) came
to the church to speak about fifteen years ago.

In 30 minutes, he ticked off 10 of the symptoms
of depression. and said if you have 3 or 4 of these
for a period of time, you can be almost sure you
are suffering from some form of depression.
AHA! I finally had a name for my problem!
After the meeting, I asked him:
"How about if you have ALL ten for about 50 years?"
His eyes got bigger, and he said, "Looks like you got it, then!"
Since then, I've been in a daily battle to overcome
this awful, debilitating disease.
Self-medication with stuff like
St.Johns Wort, which adjusts Seritonin in your brain,
but NO ONE knows the right amount.
I'm still adjusting.
(I also hear that ice cream raises your seratonin level :-)
In this age of instant gratification,
my family was expecting the symptoms of my
depression to disappear overnight/quickly.
"Take 2 aspirin and call me in the morning." syndrome.
It just does not happen that way.
It takes a loooong time to recover from half-a-century
of depression.

This also wasn't enough to save my first marriage.
My wife of 37 years, and who is an RN,
moved in with her 94 year old Mother and her
other disabled daughter, 'to care for them'.
I AM NOT WELCOME there. ...nuff said.

(As I said, 50 years of chronic depression is not overcome
easily or quickly.)

I started north on a cruise in my 26ft sailboat in 2004,
hoping to make it to NY to visit my 85 year old
Sister.
Well...FOUR hurricanes later,
(got as far as Jacksonville)
My dog and I turned back south to Hollywood.

UPDATE/August/2006
I've been here in NY since June 12
and my sister died a few weeks after I arrived.
(...had ALS, Lou Gehrigs Disease.)
EVERYBODY here says what a wonderful Christian she was.
I sincerely hope so, but for years we have had many
discussions about the Gospel, and what one has to do
to be saved, and she is what I call a 'yeah, but...'
I would say something like 'one ONLY needs to trust
in Jesus, who He was/is, and what He did on the
cross for us.'
Then she would come back with "Yeah, but...." and
mention attending church/communion/ or any number of
other religious practices.
I try not to think about "It is appointed unto man once to die..."
or any number of other related Scriptures.
THIS IS FOR SURE...WHEREVER MY SISTER IS NOW,
SHE WOULD WANT YOU TO KNOW AND UNDERSTAND THIS!

I'm glad I'm not the Judge,
and NONE of this is helping my depression at all...

after my sister's rather large estate is settled...
There is little that can compare with sailing
on Biscayne Bay and the Keys
in the right seasons/weather.

You sometimes feel that life isn't worth living.
You can see no future. There is a loss of hope.
You feel all you've ever done is make mistakes
and that's all that you ever will do.
You feel irritable or angry more than usual.
You feel you have no confidence.
You spend a lot of time thinking about what has gone wrong,
what will go wrong or what is wrong about yourself as a person.
You may also feel guilty sometimes about
being critical of others
(or even thinking critically about them).
You feel that life is unfair.
You have difficulty sleeping or wake up
very early in the morning and can't sleep again.
You seem to dream all night long and sometimes have disturbing dreams.
You feel that life has/is 'passing you by.'
