Is The Alaskan Malamute The Right Dog For You

When considering adding a dog (large or small) to your family, there are many things one must think on, one of those things is the relationship your new member will have with children, yours or someone elses. The best way for us to address this is to simply give you a list of a few of our
'House Manners'

For Kids:

No running in the house if there is a dog inside.

No rough handling of the dogs, this includes ear and tail pulling.
All very small toys must be picked up.
{mals LOVE to hide those little army men in their mouths}.

No feeding dogs from the table.

If giving a treat the child must have the mal do something for it
{sit or down}.

No teasing with food or toys.

For Dogs:
Upon entering the house, the dog must WALK NOT RUN up to the child and gently greet him.

No running in the house.

Roughhousing\wrestling is only allowed with adults, not small children.

No sitting and begging for food allowed at any time.

ALL treats must be taken out of the hand with the upmost gentleness.

There are many wonderful aspects of owning an Alaskan Malamute, along
with them, there are many that some people may view as not so wonderful.

1.He Digs many many holes, and with boredom this will increase.

2.He Howls although it is not common for the Mal to be a 'yappy dog' he does howl and with boredom or loneliness this also increases.

3.He matures slowly this means basically he will be quite puppy like for at least 2 sometimes 3 yrs.

4.He has the need and desire to work and altho he is not a 'hyper' dog if not directed properly he can become quite destructive.

5.He IS strong willed and you the owner must be strong willed enough to be the 'Alpha' or leader of your pack. A malamute that does not know where he stands in his pack order will very unhappy.

6.He sheds twice a year and hair goes everywhere.

7.Although not always he can be dog aggressive with those of the same sex usually spaying or neutering, along with socialization to other dogs from an early age should help stop this.

If you can deal with these aspects of owning an Alaskan Malamute then
he will make you a wonderful lifelong friend.
