The manufacture of the helical focussing mount required modification of the machine tools and lathes by Leitz themselves . Solenoid operated jigs and tool posts allowed the multi-start threads to be cut in one or two operations without the need to set up the lathe for every cutting job . 
These mechanics are possibly assembling your Leica !
THEY DON'T MAKE THEM LIKE THEY USED TO !
Many people in Wetzlar worked for Leitz . The Steel industry was also a big local employer .
