Reparrows vs Arrow Fix

There is now a set of tooling being marketed as "Arrow Fix" that enables the user to make footings that seem to be like Reparrows.

The system uses a method I rejected when I was developing the Reparrow concept in 2004. It works. But, the results leave much to be desired.

With the Arrow Fix approach, it is not possible to get the edge of the tapered hole as thin as I make the edges of the socket in my Reparrows.

The photo shows the edges of the Reparrow (the walnut footing at left) to be less than one third the thickness of the lighter colored Arrow Fix examples.

The thicker edge of the footings made with Arrow Fix tooling means the hole is smaller, requiring the footing and the shaft to be sanded to that smaller diameter if the joint is to be smooth. This means that section of the arrow is that much smaller than the rest.

Reparrow footings are made about .002" larger than the fractional size of the shaft. The edge of the Reparrow socket is only .002-.004" thick. So, much less diameter is lost in sanding to a smooth joint.

What's more, you can repair about 120 arrows with Reparrows for the price of the Arrow Fix tooling.
