03.10.12
Hello everyone, I would first like to apologize for letting the club fall silent the last year and a half, or so.
A while back, I was diagnosed with MS (Multiple Sclerosis) which jumbled up my priorities for a while. Lots of doctor visits, five MRI's, a spinal tap, and getting started on a daily injection of Copaxone put many things (including the ACCA) on the back burner.
At the same time, the economic downturn caused my employer to let a few people go, which meant more work for the rest of us. That also added to my lack of free time. The economy also led the Fed's to pressure the banks (credit cards) to increase their cash and reduce their credit which led to higher interest rates/monthly payments. That, in turn, made me take on some repair projects on the side to help pay the bills, which also used up my free time.
In December of 2011, I received some welcome news; the doctor said my MS was "behaving" itself and the injections look to be working, as far as keeping the flare ups at bay.
That allowed me to free up some time and I was able to start getting caught up on the ACCA.
In January I started with building up a new supply of newsletter back issues (I was almost completely out) so I could then process memberships and include them, as I always have.
Now, for those who don't know, I don't just take them to "Staples" and get copies made because of the cost. Way back when I volunteered to help out the club, I bought a copy machine (on my own dime) to do newsletters and manuals. I takes about one hour to copy, assemble, and staple 18 newsletters (I do 'em in batches of 18). This last round of newsletter making required about 550 copies, which is about 31 hours of time.
That is what I was doing in January and February. But now I'm done with those and I am now diving into the new memberships and freebies. Once I get caught up on those, I am then going to get caught up on regular memberships/renewals/newsletters and (more or less) pick up where I got side tracked.
Once again, I am sorry for getting behind, and I feel terrible that I was not able to keep up. I deserved the harsh words I got from some of you and I'll do everything I can to make it right.
Later ....... Paul W.

1982. The bad economy finally caught up with Arctic Cat. In the summer of '81, just as Arctic was ready to start production of the 1982 models, the banks pulled the plug. Arctic couldn't get the loans they needed to start building the new sleds so they announced that production was suspended for '82 and Cat found themselves in a "catch 22". They banks wouldn't give the money to build sleds and then the banks said they couldn't give them anything for '83 because they didn't built anything in '82...
They did have the '82 prototypes more or less ready for production though. the '82 lineup included the Puma, Jag, Panther, Pantera, Cougar, El Tigre, and possibly the El Tigre Sport with IFS.
The Puma was direct-drive (no chaincase) with a 440 fan cooled engine and a rubber track. There was also a 300 cc fan cooled, oil injected, single cylinder version that was being tested.
The Jag was also a direct-drive with the 440 fan cooled, oil injected engine.
The Panther was to have a 500 cc oil injected liquid cooled engine.
The Pantera had the 440 cc liquid cooled, oil injected twin.
The Cougar had a 500 cc fan cooled engine with oil injection and dual carbs.
The El Tigre had the familiar 500 cc liquid cooled engine, but also had oil injection added.
The El Tigre Sport was based on the '80 Cross Country prototype, which was based off the Trail Cat IFS chassis.
Here are some pics of the 1982 line up:

Back on 11.21.08, I hinted at a new project that member Allen T. was working on...
Well, here it is!
I (Paul W.) had the privilege of rebuilding/restoring the motor, and I'm glad to see that my work didn't cost Allen any points!
Okay, it's not a Cat, but it did turn out nice. So nice, in fact, that Allen sent me this note:
"Paul - here are some pictures of the completed Starcraft. I took 2nd place at the VSCA National show even though it scored a perfect 100 out of 100. The judge (who I know) told me he gave me second because mine was over restored! I guess I did too good a job! It was also in the running for the National Championship but lost. Thanks again for all your help.
Allen "
Allen's newest project IS a Cat (a rare one) and I'll post pics when it is completed.

Member Ken R. (NY) would like some help from the membership:
"Paul, could you run a request on the AccA web site for me? I've been tracking 1963 Arctic Cats and compiling the production numbers and the model type. I have around 72 sleds now, but I know there are more out there. From what I've found, the oldest Cat info that I have is production number 46 which is a model 450. The next oldest is production number 49, again it's a model 450. Since there are no production numbers available from Arctic Cat, I thought this would be interesting info for Cat owners. I would also like to start the same thing for the 1962 and 1964 sleds."
That's a great idea, Ken. If any of you would like to help out, please contact Ken with your info.
To contact Ken, please CLICK HERE.
Also, would any other members like to start a registry for any of the other years? If so, just let me (Paul W.) know and I'll get your info up asap!

New member Dan M. (from MI) writes:
"I'm the proud owner of a '70 Panther 760 JLO, widemouth hood and chrome pipes."
Nice sled! Those 1969-70-71 "big block" Panthers are a crowd pleaser where ever they go, and are definately a piece of snowmobiling history.

Member Doug R. would like to know:
"What is the coating on some of the early 1970's belly pans and can it be duplicated? Also, does anyone work on the ACS sidepipes (aka "montanas")? I'm looking for someone to put new header pipes on mine."
Doug, I think the coating is anodizing since the pan is aluminum and that is what is most often done to aluminum parts. But, I could be wrong. Do any of the members know for sure?

Brad Cooper sent in this request:
"Hi, I am looking for a Arctic Cub 2x2 minibike. Made in the mid 1960's. Would you happen to know of anyone who might have one for sale? I have been trying to buy one for a while now but haven't sucessful. I have a small collection of 2x2 "motorcycles" and the Cub is one I don't have yet. Please pass my name and number on to anyone who might have any leads.
Thank you, Brad Cooper, 1-541-501-6361, Eugene, Oregon."
