Members Bill E., Ken K., Joe R., Gary W., Frank S., Ricky B., Duane F., James E., Tom E., & Perry H.: I have your memberships/renewals/freebies and am getting them done this week. October was a crazy month for me and I didn't have time to get it done. I also ran out of decals and back issues and had to get some more made up. I will get these done asap, and you should see them this week or early next week. I'm very sorry for the delay.

Rubicon Show pics will be up soon, stay tuned...

Holy smokes, this summer is flying by fast! It's coming up on "Rubicon" time again, and member Bob G. sent this note:
Hi Paul, Just to let you know I have a new website that you could plug for me,
it's www.vintage-cats.com and it has all the show info on it. If you could put it on the ACCA page that would be great. Also, I will donate 2
brand new El Tigre hats for you to give away at the show, so think up a contest for them!
Thanks, Bob
The site looks nice, and it has a page for events in WI, so go ahead and check it out!

Back on 11.21.08, I hinted at a new project that member Allen T. was working on...
Well, here it is!
I (Paul W.) had the privilege of rebuilding/restoring the motor, and I'm glad to see that my work didn't cost Allen any points!
Okay, it's not a Cat, but it did turn out nice. So nice, in fact, that Allen sent me this note:
"Paul - here are some pictures of the completed Starcraft. I took 2nd place at the VSCA National show even though it scored a perfect 100 out of 100. The judge (who I know) told me he gave me second because mine was over restored! I guess I did too good a job! It was also in the running for the National Championship but lost. Thanks again for all your help.
Allen "
Allen's newest project IS a Cat (a rare one) and I'll post pics when it is completed.

Member Ken R. (NY) would like some help from the membership:
"Paul, could you run a request on the AccA web site for me? I've been tracking 1963 Arctic Cats and compiling the production numbers and the model type. I have around 72 sleds now, but I know there are more out there. From what I've found, the oldest Cat info that I have is production number 46 which is a model 450. The next oldest is production number 49, again it's a model 450. Since there are no production numbers available from Arctic Cat, I thought this would be interesting info for Cat owners. I would also like to start the same thing for the 1962 and 1964 sleds."
To contact Ken, please CLICK HERE.
That's a great idea, Ken. If any of you would like to help out, please contact Ken with your info. Also, would any other members like to start a registry for any of the other years? If so, just let me (Paul W.) know and I'll get your info up asap!

New member Dan M. (from MI) writes: I'm the proud owner of a '70 Panther 760 JLO, widemouth hood and chrome pipes.
Nice sled! Those 1969-70-71 big motored Panthers are a crowd pleaser where ever they go, and are definately a piece of snowmobiling history.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1974. "The One". 1974 saw some trouble for the snowmobile industry; OPEC, warm winters, and excess inventory. Many lesser brands were getting out of the biz and flooding the market with cheap sleds. For Arctic, that meant holding back on production and holding the line on prices which meant lower profits. Snowmobile racing was still going strong and '74 would see the introduction of "SNO PRO". There were a few changes for the '74 line up, but it was mostly a year of refinements. The Panther, Cheetah, and Lynx all got a new seat/storage compartment design. The Puma was dropped from the line after a four year run. The Kitty Cat was back. The Lynx came in two versions, the Lynx Series I and Series II. The Lynx I was built on the short chassis and was basically a '72/'73 Puma with different decals and engine choices. The Series II was built on the mid-size chassis and was basically a '72 Cheetah. The Series I came with the 292 single or the new 295 Wankel. The Series II came with the 340 or 440 fan-cooled twins. The El Tigre was also available in two versions: Trail-Tuned and Track-Tuned. The trail 'Tiggers were the 340 and 440. They had a slightly revised front end geometry, 2/3rds cleated internal drive track, black gas tank and a new seat with green piping. The 340 was the T1 series free-air and the 440 was the T7 series free-air four-plugger. The track 'Tiggers were basically the same as the '73. The 295 had the T1, chrome gas tank, and cleat drive track. The 400 used the T7 but had an internal drive track on it. The EXT was gone as the USSA effectively banned production of MOD sleds and put the factory teams in their own racing series.
The VIP was an upscale Panther in a new, brown color and with a new hydraulic drive system. It was originally scheduled for a '73 release but was held back by Arctic and released for sale as a 1974 model. There was a second run of VIP's for the '74 season, and the ones that did not sell that year were carried over to the '75 model year.
Total production for the '74 model year was: 60,857
The Panther models and (production numbers) were: 340 (7,500), 440 (6,001), 295 Wankel (2,176).
The Panther VIP saw: 4,000 carried over from the '73 season, with another 3,977 built for '74.
The Cheetah came in at: 400 (6,000), 440 (4,500).
The Lynx Series I had: 292 (3,999), 295 Wankel (3,000).
The Lynx Series II: 340 (5,501), 440 (4,001).
The Trail-Tuned El Tigre had: 340 (4,202), 440 (4,000).
The Track-Tuned El Tigre was: 295 (3,000), 400 (3,000).
Here are some pics of the 1974 line up:

Member Doug R. would like to know:
What is the coating on some of the early 1970's belly pans and can it be duplicated? Also, does anyone work on the ACS sidepipes (aka "montanas")? I'm looking for someone to put new header pipes on mine.
Doug, I think the coating is anodizing since the pan is aluminum and that is what is most often done to aluminum parts. But, I could be wrong. Do any of the members know for sure?

Brad Cooper sent in this request:
Hi, I am looking for a Arctic Cub 2x2 minibike. Made in the mid 1960's. Would you happen to know of anyone who might have one for sale? I have been trying to buy one for a while now but haven't sucessful. I have a small collection of 2x2 "motorcycles" and the Cub is one I don't have yet. Please pass my name and number on to anyone who might have any leads.
Thank you, Brad Cooper, 1-541-501-6361, Eugene, Oregon.

Member Allen T. from MN sent in this pic of his "EXT" collection:
1970 Panther 295 EXT (with correct JLO R295) - 1971 EXT 292 - 1972 EXT 400 (twin)
Nice! Allen is also working on another restoration: I won't say what it is but, (hint) the engine is a rare dual carb Kohler RK-440 2T...

New Member John C. writes: "I believe I might be the club's only member from south Florida. I have a number of sleds in my garage down here so my neighbors think I'm a little strange, but my hobby is restoring vintage sleds. My roots stem from a little town on the New York-Canadian border called Chateaugay (New York). My travels put me in a snow bank once or twice a year so my love of sleds just continues to grow. I am 52 years old and have owned a sled the majority of those years. My newest project is a '71 Puma 634 that I just picked up in Oshkosh (WI) and is on its way south, as we speak, to its new home in Delray Beach. She will be taken apart piece by piece and by the time I am through she will look better than the day she slid off the conveyor belt. I also have a '78 Jag 340, a '65 Ski Doo Chalet, and an '83 & '84 Ski Doo Blizzard 9700, all of which are going through some form of restoration at this time. The '84 is being completed the same way I plan on completing the Puma. Every nut and bolt will be restored. For the Puma, the only part I will be hunting for are the pipes, of which I'm sure you know are next to impossible to find. But, that's what keeps restoration nuts like me going. So, enough from your new member, I look forward to chatting with the other members and possibly getting some ideas from them for the Puma. I will be looking forward to my membership pack in the mail, until then "think snow" (up north, that is)!"

Returning member Steve P., from WI, sent along an article he wrote. Check it out HERE.
Steve also sent along this note: "Currently, I still have the nice Jag you had on the site some time ago, but I also have added a 1972 Lynx, 1988 El Tigre 5000, and currently building a Mod-Stock radar/ice drag sled based on a '77 El Tigre 5000. I hope to have this machine done by winter, but it will not have the power plant I will be building for next season, but a '77 500 cc engine that has been modified. The sled has been put on a diet, and is some 15 or more pounds lighter! I hope to run the racer at Waconia '09, at least during the radar runs, and maybe other local events this coming winter."
