The Best Hallowe'en tradition could be carving pumpkins. Every year for the past five years, I've gotten together with my friends and carved pumpkins in the afternoon and lit them all together after dark.
You have to be preparded to get your hands a bit messy with pumpkin guts while you plan the design on your pumpkin.
The classic pumpkin design has always been a scary face, and there's nothing wrong with that.
It can be a lot of fun letting your imagination run wild with other spooky shapes and designs.
It's also a way you can experiment with depth and mid-tones by carving away only part of your pumpkin skin. Another fun variation is lighting your pumpkin with an eerie green glow stick instead of a candle.
A week or so after Hallowe'en our pumpkins rot, collapse and take on a whole new character. My friend calls this the "Michael Jackson" stage of a Jack o' Lantern. Ewwww.
