House of Mark Bartlett in Westcote Gloucestershire

This story is the background of the ancestors and descendants of John BARTLETT and
Mary ARTHERS who were married in Shorthampton Church, Chilson, in West Oxfordshire,
England on the 9th November 1789. For many years I wondered why my ancestors left
Britain, as in many cases colonial pioneers faced considerably more difficult and uncertain
lives in unknown countries. While there is still much to learn we have found enough records
and local information to give some idea of the factors influencing their decisions and possible
reasons for emigration All

The 1841 census was the first useful census but only included the place the census was
taken, The household and those in the household, their occupation, actual age of children,
age of adults round down to the nearest 5 and yes or no to the question were you born in
this county. John Bartlett said he was 75, an agricultural labourer and "yes" he was born in
the county. When he died suddenly on the 1st Jul 1843 he was recorded as being 82 years
of age. If this is correct he was born between July 1760 and June but at this time no record
of his baptism has been found in Oxfordshire.
Jacksons Oxford Journal 28th July 1843 recorded the following
Inquests by James Westell Esq. Coroner:
On the 1st July at Chilson, on the body of John Bartlett, 82 years of age who died suddenly the same
morning in his chair. Verdict "natural death, by the visitation of God."
As little else is known about John Bartlett at the moment I will start the story with the families
of wife Mary Arthers great grandparents John ARTHURS and Elizabeth
BUSBY who were
married in Kingham, Oxfordshire on the 6th Jan 1693/94.
(prior to 1752 England used the Julian calendar
which finished the year on March the 25th so using our present day Gregorian calendar this would be 6th Jan 1694)
